Button Quail are found in the wilds of China; Coturnix are found in Japan. Neither were 'developed' for anything. The coturnix have been improved upon but they are still gamebirds.
You're right! Maybe I should re-phrase that - "I consider gamebirds to be birds that can survive in the wild here in the USA!" I consider a gamebird to be one that can be hunted. The coturnix quail here in the USA today are far from the original birds that came from Asia. The original coturnix could fly long distances - today they can't fly 2 yards. Cross breeding for a heavier meatier bird resulted in what we have today.
just wanted to give you a shout out. Your package arrived excellently packaged and almost ALL of the little quailies are going to the hatcher. Big thanks and I look forward to adding the biggest of these to mine... and the rest will make some yummy dinners

I'm really gonna ruffle you with that one
If that's the case, then ringneck pheasants wouldn't fall under the gamebird category since they cannot survive in the wild in KY. I believe it's that they are missing something in their diets? Idk, but we don't need permits to keep them because they'll just die if they escape.
Someone should tell my coturnix that they can't fly. I had to search for one in the woods one day when she escaped the pen then flew away from me. It's a good 60 feet behind the house and she was 10'-15' in.
Finally found her buried under the leaf litter...almost stepped on the little stinker.
Ok, today I got the Delaware run almost done, just need to bury wire on 2 sides and a few trim boards , plus additional perches. We are having torrential downpours of rain again :-S I painted the 2X4s for the leghorn run, luckily they should be dry by now. I was going to make the run 12 feet square, but the cost of pressure treated wood made me decide to do 8 x8, and 6 feet high. Hoping to sell some of these pullets, but no luck so far. The young rooster I got for them is so cute! He is in with others his age until he catches up to the girls. I will put you all on the waiting list for a dozen white leghorn eggs when they start laying, ok?
Oh my, I was just looking at your bantam sf's , they are gorgeous. I have to stay out of bantams, I don't have enough runs for the chickens I have! But I keep working on it!
Thanks so much- I know the feeling everytime a box of eggs come in the mail my family ask where am I going to put them. I just say you know I am not planning on keeping all of these I really only keep what I like the best. The problem is I like almost everything the best and if what I have for sell don't sell I think that is alright I have to keep them that is what a resonsible breeder does
Yeah, my husband says I have too many chickens but when somebody wants a whole flock of one breed, I may not have that many of a particular breed all the same age. So see, I really don't have enough chickens yet:-D And then sometimes I don't know what kind of chickens they are when they are little, so I don't want to sell something really special ..
so I just keep it in case...
