online Crazy Egg Chain Chat thread

I had BLRW eggs from Oberhaslikid...it probably helped that I am in the same state as her, but I still only got one chick out of the 6 eggs. Several of them developed, so i know they were fertile. I think my problem was my incubation.

Out of 11 Columbian Cochin eggs, I had 2 develop and 1 of those quit. The other is due to hatch in a couple days.

The rest of the eggs I had were BBS Orps from gumpsgirl (that i purchased) and I hatched 3 out of 12. Then from the CEC I got 12 BBS Orps from Mountain Laurel Poultry - and hatched 5. Had to cull 1, because something went wrong during my incubation and he couldn't stand his feet were curled. I have another one I may have to cull, because he's hopping around on 1 foot - again, I blame my incubation..so out of 12 BBS Orps I've got 3 good chicks.

Out of my own eggs, incubated here, I'm running 100% fertility with 90% hatch. Not so good with the shipped eggs this year.

i don't think it's anyone's fault, just how it's gone.

I also had blue/splash cochins, button quail, and mottled cochin eggs in the 'bator...I hatched 3 button quail and accidently killed them

nothing from either cochins.

I have had pretty good luck with shipped eggs this year. I have only had 1 order that didn't develope at all and I am not mentioning any names.

I have had 50% hatches which I personally consider great on shipped eggs all the way to 90%. But I am easy to please if I get 3 chicks out of 12 shipped eggs I consider that a victory.

But that is me. But I really do not agree with the heat issue,

Nobody shout at me please. But I have hens outside in this Texas heat all summer long hatching babies. It is well over 100 degrees with the heat index. And they dont have a problem hatching them .I dont care so much for shipping in the cold weather.

I think heat becomes an issue during shipping when they are in a hot truck for hours at a time. A truck or car really heats up in the boiling sun. The mail carrier may stop for lunch and leave your eggs in the car and that is when heat would be an issue. In a black vehicle it takes less the 5 mins for it to become boiling inside. Right now it is soo hot that we make sure we roll the windows down in my jeep 30 mins before leaving because if you dont you cannot hardly breath when you get in it--of course its black!!

I dont have the mailman issue, he refuses to deliver anything but mail to my house. He says there is no turn around.

But that is fine, I like to pick mine up at the PO. But I realize some folks cant because of the hours and such.

I didn't know that you had such horrible luck with my Columbians. They've stopped laying right now but when they pick up, I'll send you more. You can't just have one Columbian!! I think part of the problem with both yours and Heather's eggs were that I brought them to my PO on a Tuesday yet they didn't even post them as accepted until Friday. So they sat there then shipped out Friday.

The Postmaster apologized to me about the mix up. For some reason they were put on a shelf under the counter instead of being put into the system.

Oh, I was going to add that I'm tossing my two LG's after the eggs that are in them hatch. I've had them for a year, I have the least amount of success with hatches in those. My Hovabator is still the most reliable. But I've gotten some really messed up eggs that even my Hovabator couldn't hatch, (and I won't mention names here), from a few people on BYC and will no longer do trades or purchase their eggs. One person I gave two different chances.

On the other hand, if I send someone eggs and they're infertile or there's a problem with them, PLEASE let me know. I'll immediately make it right or will do so as soon as I can.

I've had great hatches, been sent great eggs from some great BYC'rs such as ILOVEFRIZZLES, ChooksChick, PamperedPoultry, and Camelot Farms. Those are on the top of my list of excellent sellers who care about what they send. There are others but those 4 really stand out.

Sweetie, I'm not upset about it! LOL You do NOT have to send me more eggs!! I don't think this was your fault at all, and I don't think they were infertile.

I'm sorry I didn't update you via PM. I didn't give it much thought. We've been sick here the last couple days, and I'm just happy to have anything hatch.

I still owe YOU eggs! My Columbian Wyandottes have finally picked up production, but the BLRW aren't doing much. I may have to send you the Columbians for now and ship you a second box with BLRW if that's OK.

I think most of my problems with the eggs has been the PO - this is the first year that I've received smashed boxes or had things take forever in shipping - both coming and going!

Hey hun, I definitely do need that D'uccle roo! I'm having fertility issues with both of mine. As far as the compliment, its well deserved.

I have to send you pics of my frizzle cochin/silkie mixes. They're adorable. My favorite is an all black one. Not a speck of another color anywhere on her. She's so pretty!! And the thing is I'm not a big fan of the frizzles but these guys have won me over...big time!!
