Opa's place -Where an old rooster visits with friends

Highlander here is a pic of my Black Sumatra rooster, Frank. He is only 7 months old so he won't be fully mature for about another 1 1/2 years. He is a beautiful, elegant bird.

Please excuse the quality of the picture-he is NEVER still!

I really thought I would love the silkies best. But the speckled sussex are my favorite. So sweet, even the rooster. And Opa's right, they are underfoot like dogs wanting attention (or snacks).

Ok, so little gray-nose is a girl. Her mom, Sweets, is much more laid back than Zelda. Tom was able to walk right up to baby today and lift her little tail....definitely a girl. She's a bit smaller than the little Royal bull. The bull's mom, Zelda, has been giving me fits all day. She's going over to Sweets' baby and tossing her in the air. Seeing that little baby cartwheeling in the air is just awful! Baby lands, stands up and shakes off, and walks away as if nothing happened. Sweets won't mess with Zelda, so she's not defending her baby. As soon as Zelda walks away, Sweets will go to her baby, lick her and nudge her to nurse. She doesn't do anything to prevent Zelda from bullying her, though. This is going to be one tough little girl.

Opa, one of the chicks I hatched out is a speckled sussex, so far a very friendly chick.
Sheila, Frank is a beauty!!

YakLady, glad you got a girl this time.

Yesterday Granny was sitting in her rocker looking out the window at the wild turkeys in the backyard. A large tom turkey was strutting, tail fanned, wings dropped, snood engorged, dancing for the benefit of the hens and the intimidation of the lesser toms. Then he would drop his pose, extend his neck and gobble to let everyone know that he was the boss. Feathers quivering he would immediately return to his dancing display. Quite some time had passed when Granny remarked that she didn't realize that a male turkeys head changed colors. She was awed to watch the birds head change color from red to blue to white, then back to red. Truly quite something to witness.

What makes this small incident so wonderful is that the turkey she was watching was about a hundred and fifty yards from the window. Last year I had taken Granny to have her eyes examined and the optometrist discovered blood clots on the retina of her right eye. I took her to a specialist and the doctor told us that at some point she had an ocular stroke and the blood clots were occluding her vision. The sight in that eye was 300/20 and she was legally blind in that eye. He recommended an experimental procedure in which a clot dissolving agent would be injected through her eye into the retina.

Watching someone insert a needle into someones eye is a difficult procedures to witness. It's almost as bad as if it were your own eye and you can't help but shudder as the needle is inserted. She has received 12 injections to date given at 6 week intervals. Her vision in that eye is now 70/20 and she is seeing things at a distance that she has never been able to see. Watching someone have such a remarkable improvement in their vision emphasizes the simple fact that the good old days are now.

Opa that is so wonderful for Granny! I hope her vision just continues to get better.

Maggie thanks for the compliment on Frank-he is a pistol, but I do love him. Nancy(Sumatra hen) has decided that biting me is a fun pasttime(not pecking, biting).

YakLady Yah for a little girl this time. If you get a chance, we would love to see her picture!
Insiderart my sister swears her Speckled Sussex is her sweetest, quietest and friendliest bird she has. She keeps telling me I need to get some(all I need is more birds

I have already cleaned the bathrooms and mopped the hall floors this morning. Oh well, at least one good thing comes of insomnia-you can clean VERY early in the morning and spend the day with the birds.
Hope you all have a wonderful day!
