If it crows it is a boy, hens don't crow ever!

Not true..hens will crow and I've seen it myself. They will crow in the absence of a rooster and take on the full leadership role of a flock.

So sorry about all those boys. Maybe you could find a couple good homes and get more hens to keep the others busy.

omelette'smom :

if i keep them-other than introducing more hens-how do i keep them from hurting each other?? my coop can hold maybe 12 and my smaller coop can hold maybe 4 comfortably. they're free range so how do i "tell" them to split up and you sleep here and you sleep there!! we're too attached to play favorites and oust a few!!:aww

I say play it by ear, and if a problem develops, then deal with it. We currently have over 20 roos of various ages, some in a "bachelor pen," and some with the general flock. There is one "alpha" rooster, and a secondary one who challenges him sometimes, but we haven't had any major problems...BUT, they all have plenty of room to get away from each other if need be. That could be a problem if space is limited. If they free-range and only come in to roost at night, I bet you can get an idea of who is "top dog" by seeing who roosts the highest. That's how it seems to work at our place, anyway.

Not true!! Just because they can take care of 10 each, doesn't mean they have to! I say get a few more girls, cuz no matter how many you have, there will be one roo that will take them all anyway!
