Opinions? Help needed!! What is this noise my ayeslbury is making?

Yes she’s there, they’ve told me to ring for an update at 17:30 so in 45 minutes. He said she seems to have discomfort on that side so perhaps it is that, it’s just strange how it happened so fast. She is still eating and drinking, they said she’s gone from 1.6 to 2kg now which is brilliant she’s put more weight on but I think we all agree on giving her the implant if it sustains her better and she is stronger and healthier. I’m so surprised it isn’t her leg though, they said it’s moving fine and there’s flexibility there, now is just the dreaded waiting that makes your anxiety a thousand times worse 😢 thank you for responding and I’ll keep you updated on my little Iris 💗 p.s (sprightly is a wonderfully unique name)!
thank you! Let us know how the call goes- waiting for news like this can be really anxiety inducing, I feel your pain, at least partly! Hopefully they have good news for you :fl

The worst possible outcome I could get she’s broken her leg and it’s the worst kind and requires surgery but on top of that too they said she’s egg bound which I don’t understand because she laid one yesterday. They was saying about how operating is risky on birds anyways but due to her they believe having some calcium problem she may not survive surgery. They’re focusing on getting the egg out first and I’ve just took some food for her, now I’m sat at home sobbing my heart out. If she’s eating and drinking fine surely that warrants her to have the surgery and surely then I can say I tried. I’m beside myself 😢💔

bless her.
Is the surgery an absolute must? Not long ago they had said that the leg seemed fine and was moving normally- surely it's only a minor break/fracture? Perhaps they could do something other than surgery?

Being egg bound is understandable- as I mentioned before, my girl had already laid an egg that day as well, but she still had more eggs stuck- sometimes they manage to produce multiple eggs in one go and sometimes only one gets stuck... thankfully this should be the lesser, simpler problem to fix. Some calcium gluconate, or whatever else they may do to get the egg moving.

If it were me, and I was able to, I would probably get a second opinion on the leg- and see if theres any way around the surgery before taking the risk- but I dont know the full extent of the issue.
Im sorry it wasnt good news :(
You'll both be in my thoughts :hugs

It’s her femur and fractured into several pieces they said. Because of her lack of density in her bones they said they don’t know wether it’s possible to put pins into the actual bone itself and that it may require an external fixture that can cost 2500-3000. She’s my baby and I’ll find the money somehow. Just like others have kids, I have my birds. Money comes and goes but her company and presence are well worth it. I’ve done a fundraiser to see wether I can accumulate anything as I’ve already racked up £500. They’re ordering her the implant in tomorrow to see wether they can heighten that calcium before the operation.

They’ve removed the bound egg and said that she is standing a little better but obviously not applying any pressure to that right leg. I will keep you updated as I sit and despair. Ringing tomorrow at 10am and thank you so much 💛💛💛

The egg is out now however her femur is fractured, which has been confirmed by the X-Ray. I have absolutely no avian specialists around here and my vets are trying their best which was probably why they said the leg seemed okay before it was x-rayed. :( I’ve taken her some food over and given them some peas and cucumber for my poor baby. I’ll just have to sit in worry till the morning. Thank you for your help 💛

It sounds like you love her very much, I can sympathize- I love my girls, they're my babies too, and I'd pay any amount to keep them safe. I cant imagine something like this happening to them- it must be so scary for you.
I'm glad the egg is out, that must be a little relief. Now we can focus on her leg.
I really hope she'll be okay! :hugs

any news?

Hi!

I rang the vets at 10am then finally got a call back after 3 attempts at 7pm. The vet said she is settled, comfortable, dealing well with pain relief and medication and she is surprised by tve amount that she’s eating and she’s passing faeces as normal, all such wonderful signs. They’re going to order the implant in for her and the head surgeons are going over the details of the whole operation on Monday, I apologise for the delay today, I’ve just been so stressed and concerned.

So,

The vet has said the operation it’s either today or tomorrow he’s waiting on a specialist to get back to him but he said if I put this pin through that bone and it shatters into pieces you’ll be getting a call… I so hope he doesn’t call.

I’m going to attach a picture of the X-ray (a complex break), the plan is to secure the bone with a pin which is quite far away and then to secure the leg with a rod and bring it out externally and fix the rest of the rod to the external part of her leg.

It’s all down to Iris now and wether the bone can withstand the pin. I’m absolutely beside myself and in tears and I’m doing all I can for her I just find it difficult to remain positive. I have been to see her and she is very subdued and lethargic but that could be due to the pain relief she is on. Please keep her in your thoughts.
