Opinions Needed: How common is it for people to get "sick" off of backyard eggs??

Have you or a family member/close friend ever gotten sick off of backyard chicken eggs?

I eat a lot of eggs in a raw state (homemade mayo etc) and have never gotten sick that I know of. Not from my backyard eggs, eggs from other backyards nor store bought eggs. Well, for whatever that is worth anyway.
I can't prove anything, but I've always suspected that folks who are acclimated to eating things like raw eggs, or are regularly exposed to stuff like chicken guts from butchering, and who have to shovel poop, that sort of thing... have healthier gut bacteria and immune systems. I think a sort of resistance to foodborne illness can be acquired by simply being around the animals you eat. In today's sterile commercial food chain we see a lot of foodborne illness that could probably be avoided by NOT being so sterile.

I still sanitize my surfaces and cook my food well, though.

i would agree with this. seems like Shannon Logic and Michelle Logic meet in the same realm. Its kind of that dirty penny concept and kids eating dirt concept. Like just let the kid put the dirty penny in his mouth, itll strengthen his/her immune system in the long run.
Sounds a lot like Joel Salitin, if youre familiar. He has the same idea in his head about the over-sterilization in modern day commercial and processed foods....i digress:bun

yes, i eat raw eggs in my old fashioned homemade ice cream all the time, never made me sick. Ive been doing that since i was a kid and didnt even think twice about it until i was an adult and kept hearing things about how we "shouldn't" be eating eggs raw and the "dangers" and such. And, i mean, ive had plenty of food poisoning from other sources like restaurants and some schiesty food that i ate which had spent entirely too much time in the fridge....whoops. Learning the hard way, here, i guess :caf

I make sure my eggs are clean when I go e them to people. I also tell them to cook to Federal guidelines and store correctly. I have not nor has anyone I have given eggs to got sick, including my grandchildren. I also make sure that my girls have a clean box to lay in, by changing the laying area weekly. Sometimes when it’s wet, they get mud on the eggs so those I will “wash” with a commercial egg cleaner. Other than that I wash my hands and cook my eggs.
