opinions on diatomaceous earth?

Sigh.... Maybe research it? Cattle, chickens, pigs, sheep...all THAT has been documented, I don't have horses anymore so I don't know, the OP asked about chickens so its moot anyway...maybe you can try it in a controlled experiment and keep good notes to share; why us it so hard to accept that some people just like to use what WORKS naturally?

The OP wanted opinions; I do believe they got them! ;)

Pleas read this article, it is an obvious prove that DE is working! On internal an
external parasites. The people that think that it isn't working without bringing any scientific prove, or any explanation why this article is wrong, don't have to read it.
This article was published on Oxford journals in 2011,so we are dealing with a serious scientific article.

Oh I LOVE actual trials from well known research facilities! It takes so much guesswork out of trial and error! I avoid any info that can't be backed up by actual studies :) otherwise, all it is is hearsay! ;) that's a really good reputable study, one I can really sink my teeth in to ha-ha! :)

My point is that if it was such a good "natural" wormer, horse, cat and dog people would be all over it.

Next time you get a new animal, take it to the vet and have a fecal done. Treat with DE, then show repeat fecal and show the results..

If DE was an effective wormer, people would be giving it to their horses, right?... and to the best of my knowledge, they aren't..

We have been in this situation enough times to know each other opinion, I respect yours,
but you can't say categorically that DE is not working.
Yes I agree that it isn't as affective as Valbasen, but it is an option for people
that doesn't want to use chemicals.

Th
I could post a bunch of links to disprove DE is ineffective as a wormer, but I wont, simply search the BYC forum if you want proof. For example: Read Bear Foot Farm's posts regarding DE. And if I'm not good enough for you to believe it from my experiences, there are plenty of posts from folks on here who used DE religiously only to discover their birds died from worm infections, most with official necropsies to prove it. All you have to do is look. Good luck..

DE may be dose dependant. It dramatically cured 10 of my dogs of tapeworm because I followed the dosage recommended by Wolf Creek Ranch website. I've read posts on BYC in which folks are using too little of it, such as a handfull in a 50 lb bag of feed. The scientific chicken tests in which DE allegedly failed to reduce the worm load used 2%, but I think Wolf Creed Ranch recommends adding 5% by weight to the feed. Without a calculator I'm guessing that's aprox 0.75 to 0.80 oz of DE per lb of feed.

I'm not opposed to using chemical wormers, and I may decide to use them on my chickens, but DE definitely works for my dogs so far.
