I'm an Easter Egger fan, but black stars and Australorps are my hands down favorites for good hardy laying hens. They are also gorgeous. Easter Eggers are pretty good layers and the bird and egg colors vary so much, you will never have a boring flock with EE's.
i really love the look of my speckled sussex. I also like black copper marans, blue laced red wyandottes, blue orpingtons, and partridge penedesencas. Oh and salmon faverolle roosters have to be some of my favorite too.

I agree with KingsCalls. Maybe you need to ask yourself a few questions to help narrow your choices. There are soooo many different breeds but not all will fit into our particular circumstances.
Do you need cold hardy birds?
Do you need to get birds that do well confined?
Do you want birds that can fly over a 6 - 8 ft. fence?
Do you want a lot of eggs or will a few do?
Do you want breeds that mix well and you don't need to watch for bullying?
These and many other questions can be answered by looking at Hendersons Chicken Chart.
I have used this and others to finally decide on my flock. I set my criteria and started looking for birds that would fit in. Even when narrowed down, there were so many to choose from, but a lot less than if I had not put certain stipulations on what would work for me and my situation. Good luck in your search. Remember, you don't need to get all of them now. This group will enable you to get many more down the road.
Using the mypetchicken.com breeder selector tool and my preferences for looks and egg colors I've ordered 2 each of the following (all pullets):
Black Austrolorp
Buff Orpington
Easter Egger
Red Star
Barnevelder
Welsummer
Spangled Russian Orloff
What I like about the mpc tool is that you can input cold hardiness and egg laying preferences to help narrow down what would be good choices. Then I looked at pictures and further descriptions of each breed and made my selections.
