Ordered eggs... so not happy

Even this doesn’t account for the level of damage the poor box took! Did someone forget to leave a Christmas tip for the Postie? Do you have dogs that may have bit them? Is there any logical reason for this level of abuse? Probably not... I’m glad you’re going to get a replacement, and the shipper should d**n well remember a fragile sticker on the next one at the very least! Best of luck!

My post man is usually really gentle (at least when it gets to the house. I've ordered so many eggs (so many quail lost due to cats...) that he literally comes up and rings the door bell and hand it to me if it says eggs on it. I've only ever had one package of eggs with dents in it and only lost like 2 eggs. And those were cracks I could have filled in and hatched. (Before I realized I could do that

Sorry you had such a bad experience :( I used to ship similarly to this seller, including using wood shavings as a packing material (in fact, I still do) but I wrapped the eggs in bubble wrap inside the egg cartons.

Nowadays I double box all my eggs. My buyers have to pay more for shipping since it costs more, but the eggs are safer.

On the Fragile thing, I have stickers I use that say Live Embryos, but I have had over the years some customers ask me not to write Fragile on the box, because USPS employees are actually rougher with boxes marked Fragile.

"One disheartening result was that our package received more abuse when marked "Fragile" or "This Side Up." The carriers flipped the package more, and it registered above-average acceleration spikes during trips for which we requested careful treatment."

That is just plain terrible! Fragile sticker or not, paper towels and wood chips do NOT protect fragile eggs being shipped. I certainly hope you showed the seller the pix that you shared with us. Good luck with the surviving eggs! :jumpy

Yes I did. I always take pics and send them if it's more than the extras they send me. If it's just the extras, I dont bother since they werent technically paid for. I spent $20 on shipping would have thought it would look better

We have all received packages that look worse than we think they should. From all the carriers. I recently received one worth several hundred dollars that had the top torn back and parts sticking out. Carrier was not USPS. My comments were not to defend damage but to maybe make someone’s shipping experience better. All the carriers use automated equipment and anything you can do to enhance a shipping experience is a positive. Beer can’s post actually enforced why you don’t want a package unidentifiable. The thought that the carriers flip the package more is just a thought. More likely it got put on the automated belt. I have seen the process many times over from beginning to end. The fact that packages marked fragile gets extra rough handling is a myth that makes a good story. While a negligent employee enforces it in situations it most assuredly will not be your point of delivery person. I know it will not change the minds of some. Like I said, eggs or not we have all been there from all shippers.

Well, the study that was done that I linked showed that when the shippers marked their packages fragile, they found that the packages experienced more abuse when marked that way. It could have just been a fluke during the study, I suppose. But it wasn't just something made up to make a good story; it was drawn from the results of that study.

Either way, I still mark mine with the stickers I have, like I said. They just say Live Embryos instead of fragile.

I have ordered eggs on Ebay and been very pleased--one or two have surprised me with how well their eggs were packed. I supposed your best guarantee is to read the reviews--if anyone complains about poor packing, avoid that shipper! I also look for NPIP (I know it's no guarantee, but still . . . ). and I look for egg sellers who are geographically close--at least in my part of the country, if not the same state. I'm so sorry you had this experience. Be sure to read Sally Sunshine's post on BYC about how to hatch/incubate shipped eggs. There's a certain process--but you can have a better hatch rate if you follow her suggestions. My first experience with shipped eggs--no hatches. My last batch--54% hatched. That's pretty good, I think!
