Ordering Chicks Needs Advice

Hello everyone, I am completely new at ordering poultry. I have my heart set on ordering chicks from IdealPoultry. I’m only ordering 8, but I’m tormented about them putting in extra males for warmth. So I’m not going to select that option. My question is will ordering 8 chicks be safe in May traveling from Texas to California? What causes chicks to die after ordering them and even keeping them at home?

I think that I read on their website somewhere that if you don't wan't the male "heaters" then they require you to insure the shipment. But, I could be losing my marbles... IJS...

You should find others in your area and do a group order. Your state msg thread on this site, or a local chicken keeper's group on FB are the best places to find others that want to get chicks. Find 3 of you that each want 8 and you're golden!
