Oregon Fall Poultry Swap - October 22 - Corvallis @ the Fairgrounds!!!

Sad day today.

Peepers (my turkey) got out of his room while we were sleeping. And one of our dogs was too rough with him. (don't know which on, but Binx did bring Peepers to me) He was already gone. He had a lot of his wing feathers, and I should have known better

He wasn't really flying, more of a hop and glide. I had left the bathroom door open( that was were he had been staying) but left a baby gate up and he must have gotten over it

I tried not to be mad at the dogs

But I'm mad at myself. I hate that we get so darned attached to these things! He was just starting to be fun. Following me around, 'talking' to me and the other birds, and had grown to about the size of a full size chicken. (he still had a lot of growing to do) I had started talking about getting him a really big chicken diaper, cause I was afraid he wasn't getting really used to being in the house. He still wanted to sleep under a brooding lamp.

Sorry, I don't mean to make everyone feel down. I just needed to 'talk' about him. I was afraid some of my fb friends would think I was nuts. Jim has been really nice to me about it. Took care of Peepers so I wouldn't have to. Has offered to take me to my favorite place for the day (Portland zoo)

Not for sure if I really want to go or not. But it's the thought.

RIP 08-15-11 "Peepers"
Not the best pics, but there were the ones on my phone, but this was my baby Nestlee aka Peepers. He was a Heritage Chocolate. His feathers would have been beautiful.

Sadly, you actually made me feel a bit better. I was feeling like a crummy duck owner - Either my dogs or a really large coon tore off my fully enclosed, welded hardware cloth (attatched with washers and screws) and pulled out a duck. I thought I had totally proofed it. NOW it has it's OWN hot wire fence around the bottom and the lowest edge. I'm glad I'm not alone in the "pet eaten by pet" saga. I also tried not to be mad at my dogs as I was the fencer/owner.

back at you.

I guess it wasn't a good weekend for birds at all! I lost the little BLRW chick. It was getting worse... or at least not getting better... and then I went to look in on it yesterday morning and found it dead-I thought. I announced to my room mates that it had died, and then it started breathing again, but it was cold and stiff (it had somehow stumbled away from the heat, despite its unwillingness to walk under other circumstances) and had never even tried to eat or drink. I never saw it react as though it could see, even with that one eye open, and it always had its head tilted back. I had already decided that if it didn't show any improvement over the weekend that it would not make it so I was a bit relieved to find it had died during the night (I really hoped for it to recover, of course, but it was looking less hopeful each feeding time) I was horrified when it started moving. It was really creepy in a 'pet cemetary' sort of way. We decided that it was likely brain damaged and decided to cull it. We gave it a chance, and we spent 4 days trying to help it, but it couldn't be fixed. We have lost chicks before, and processed adults, but this was the first time we've had to cull a chick. It was hard and the kids cried for almost an hour.
When we got home at last I checked on the other 6 chicks. One of them had died after getting tangled up in a piecs of bailing twine. So we're down to 5. It had to have happened recently too, because our sitters didn't notice it. It was a depressing discovery but I was still glad I checked though because we would have lost another if I hadn't. One got its self stuck in the fence (don't ask me how!) but I got it out safely.
I am sorry to add to the bad news... I hope somebody else has good things going on!

So, I was aware of this event, but had no clue when it was going to happen or where. . . Good thing I actually dragged myself over here.

I hope some of my birds and/or eggs or something will see the event like last time, but, again, I won't be there myself.

It is really killing me to have to even be thinking of letting him go because that is not something I take lightly at all! I am really hoping to find him a great home with someone who is willing to work with his shyness (with strong willed ladies lol) and love him like we do. He is a beauty, a sweetie and yes, he is from Cloverleaf originally via Dancing Hen so you do know what you are getting
big_smile.png
He thinks he's a Serama, which isn't a bad thing
lol.png
but if only he had a Serama crow!

Let me know if you want me to bring him to WA when I stop by later this week

He won't cause trouble here.

What are you looking for? I have a number of point of lay hens and I am not really far from you if you don't mind driving to WA

Are you still interested in this?? I think you said Buff Orp and another type, which I can't remember at the moment..
roll.png

I am also looking for someone who would like a Buff Orp Roo..he is a bit loud..I think practicing his call, but I have handled him since a bitty chick and he doesn't mind..likes his chest scratched..
I hate to part with him, but he is getting really loud..

When your ready for a few more hens contact me back to see what I will still have. I don't anticipate anyone going anywhere at this point but they can free range if they want and sometimes things happen. I have Point of Lay Blue Laced Red Wyandottes in multiple colors, the one BO pullet, black Brabanter cross pullet, Black Ameracauna pullet, pretty mutt pullets...I don't know who the daddy is
