Oregon Fall Poultry Swap - October 22 - Corvallis @ the Fairgrounds!!!

Ok, so do I put in my 7 blue copper marans eggs in the incubator or do I eat those eggs and wait for a week or so for the 12 to 18 call duck eggs I ordered? Mix, trust the one incubator (I really don't like all my eggs in one incubator/basket after my last hatch). Hmmm, realize I don't really have space for either but do have a building plan in mind (DH is sort of warned)

My totally non-scientific approach...the wider the comb area the more likely a boy. Go study them and see if you can tell a difference and report back. Actually I've been pretty accurate early on but maybe it was my bad luck to have so many boys that the odds were with me!

So I have two little porcelain d'uccle boys that need homes. They are 7 weeks old. They came from Cloverleaf. I am putting my feelers out now, and hope to rehome them sooner rather than later. But will bring them to the swap if I fail to find them homes before then. They are really beautiful...colors are coming in really nice. They are also really sweet and love to be handled. They were late bloomers that decided to be roos, and I have decided to only keep the mille fleur roo. I will put these on my available list, and hopefully remove them if they find homes.

I am looking for good homes where they will not be sent to freezer camp.

These boys are very special.

I will definately have more birds available by swap time. I will probably be rehoming one of the mf cochin chicks I got from K7 who seems to be a roo, as well as a super broody white silkie (pet quality but super sweet) and any extra polish chicks from the egs I set in my bator this week.

Most of those are for a new breeding project I hope to work on, but if a lot hatch there will be more than I need.

Anyway....just thought I'd start listing what I have at the moment....even though it is bound to change by October!

Have: 2 Porcelain d'uccle boys
1 PQ White Silkie hen (11 months old)
Assorted Polish chicks in the bator....would be 16 weeks or so by swap time.

Awww they are so sweet! Have they started crowing yet? Anyone know how loud a D'Uccle's crow is? Lol I seriously should not even be considering another roo since I have 10 Serama roos in my house right now but I have two Mille Fleur D'Uccles and I would love a porcelain one.

I have to agree but with Silkies that doesn't always apply. I thought for sure I had a silkie hen for 9 months...until he decided to crow

I have never been able to tell with any of my silkies before 4-5 months at the earliest. Them and EE's ...so very hard.

They are fetchingly handsome. Beautiful color.

Those darned silkies! Even the ones you are sure are boys some days look like girls (especially the nice bred boys with full fuzz-tops)...until they crow. And boy can they crow. You wouldn't think noise like that would come out of a cute fluffy.

I tried hatching silkie eggs once...all boys! Can you even belive that? I had to buy known pullets from Kelar just to get a couple of silkie girls.

My silkies are around 8 weeks, or so. Right now they all have really small heads and they look like they all have a spiked hair-do.

I've tried the checking the wing for 'how many rows of primary feathers' trick, I've checked the 'tails', looked for 'spurs', and anything else I've read about trying to sex them. I think I'm just going to wait till I hear a crow or see an egg.

I think I am going to have a garage sell in a few weeks. I have too much stuff!

I think I'm going to invest any money made from the sell on getting a couple of new coops made.

I found a guy in Portland that will work with me in designing what I want. I found a few coops I thought were ok, but there is always something I would have done just a little bit different. I have some houses I was going to use as coops, but I think I'm now going to save them for ducks. I think it would be cool to have an area for each different breed type. Like a silkie house, the egg layer house, the duck house and (any other types I fall in luv with

house) I have a nice size storeage shed that I would like to get cleaned out before any type of garage sell. I know it would be perfect, if not for a coop, maybe to use for chicken supplies.

Hubby wasn't real happy

about the 4 buff orpington pullets I came home with this week, but did say that at least now I had some 'real' chickens.

I am new to all of this and learning. I will be attending the fall swap but not sure if I will have a table. I thought I would let everyone know that I will be going to Bend either June 11th or 12th for one night. If anyone needs anything taken over there or brought back, I may be able to help. I will be going through Salem.

I am not sure what I have belongs here but here it goes.

I have 5 Sebastopol x Tufted Toulouse goslings that are just over one week old, unsexed--both parents are grey and are raising them, free range. Will be raised to eat if not sold for pets.
One white Sebastapol x Toulouse gander that I believe is just over one year old. May consider letting a younger goose of the same go with him.
6 bourbon red turkeys that are being raised for Thanksgiving, unsexed at this time, will be pastured
2 black sex link pullets, almost 10 weeks old
1 RIR pullet, almost 10 weeks old

I also have cornish cross broilers-will be pastured, and pigs that have an outside pen. This flock of broilers will be ready in July and pigs will be ready in August. I may do another flock after this one.

I am looking for a couple of Old English Game hens to keep my little roo company. He was very cute as a chick with a purple head- had hoped he was a she- but too attached to let him go. My first experience with bantams.

I will work on the rest of my want list.
