Oregon Spring Poultry Swap April 23, 2011 in Canby!!!

We would love it if anyone had any Dominiques to bring to the swap. We should have some chicks available by then, along with any additional culls. I think we are going to set some eggs in the bator after all. We've evaluated some of our young pullets and several need to go, and leaves us down in what we were anticipating to be high numbers for spring egg layers.

Would it be possible to do cage cards on each of the cages - maybe have someone waiting there at a table as soon as you pull up to give you cage cards and your name tag. It was kind of confusing as to what birds were sold, how much they were, what they were, etc.

Also, I would love to have a most beautiful rooster and hen contest. There were some gorgeous hens and roos there at the swap, and I think if we all used our raffle ticket numbers to submit a vote (again, maybe the clip board could be kept at the main table?) it would be a fun addition. I could make some burned wood signs (nothing fancy, but cute) for the winners to hang on their coops at home. What do you think?

Excited already!

I think it's a great idea and would be a lot of fun!

As far as the cage cards, I think it would be a nice touch but I think we can only request that the people bringing birds do it. I know that for people who only bring a few birds, it probably wouldn't be a big deal to make them but for others like Oregonjen, feathers4fun, etc...it would be a huge deal. A lot of Jen's birds were brought at the last minute and I know she had her hands full all day long. Plus I really don't think it is feasible for someone other than the owner of the birds to make the cards. As we all know, the list changed and grew a lot in just the last 24 hours before the swap.

We tried the "main table" idea at the last one and it didn't work well at all. No one really wants to sit there and man it (make sure people know what to do and hand things out) to be perfectly honest. There is too much going on - too much to see, too many people to talk to and too many people coming and going etc not to mention all the set up that people have to do. This is why I didn't do a sign in sheet this time. We could keep the raffle ticket buckets and rooster/hen list at the same table where we have the name tags. That seemed to work out well having it near the food.

Just my opinions from what I've learned and observed at the last 3 swaps. If someone else wants to jump in and throw out ideas or try things, great!

Cloverleaf, I'll start the Want/Have list off....

Zoomummzy

Have - Nothing! (finally no roosters!)

Want - Nothing! (yeah right lol)

Will make cheesecakes for those who want them - $15 each.

Sorry to raise the price, but Winco raised all their prices on the supplies I need (basic supplies) for the cheesecakes. I only charge for the supplies, not my time. I can post a list after the first of the year of the ones I can make since I have several new recipes I'm going to experiment with between now and then.

I completely agree...I think the cage cards are a fantastic idea, BUT will have to be left to people to make up for their own birds, if they choose to do so. And a contest would be great - maybe have a list like Laura said, next to the nametags, and if people want to vote, they can, if not then no worries!

And Yay to Laura for not having any roosters that need to go away!!

I'll start an "official" list once there are a few more peeps with things to put on it!

I didn't mean that there should be a designated person for filling out the cards- that would take forever, and I think people would just as soon forget about it rather than wait in line. I meant just handing the cards with a pen/marker to the owners to fill them out.

I suppose we could hope that people would get their name badge, their raffle ticket and cage cards if they were left at the table (with weights to keep things from blowing away!) and a big neon sign saying "SIGN IN!!!!"

I'll look into how much it would cost to laminate some pages - it would be nice if the cage cards we re-useable for each swap, so we could use the erasable markers on them, then just clean them off after the swap. It would also make them heavier so they wouldn't flap as much in a breeze, and the birds couldn't eat them.

Just a thought. I wouldn't mind looking into it more and trying to help with this. I would love to do a swap sometime in the Bend area for us Eastern Oregoners. I've already convinced Keith that we could build big perfect long rows of cages so that all the birds could be displayed perfectly, as well as make extra cages for sale. And each bird would have a cage card, and a pavillion tent for the food, and a microphone and everything would just be perfect and run totally smooth! Keith thinks I'm doing drugs in the chicken coop with the roosters, but he's supportive of even my wildest dreams

.

I think at the next swap we will definitely bring cages to sell - even just simple wire ones for carrying/transporting. We'd love to make some chicken tractors to sell, this time we didn't because I thought I was not going, then I thought I was just taking the car... so it goes. Next year I will be feeling much better. At this swap I was on several pain killers and muscle relaxers because of my car accident, so everything was a bit of a daze for me. But at least we made it! I had a blast!

Let me know Bil and PM me!

To mark which birds are sold I would recommend using zipties. They work on all sizes, the smallest of chicks to the biggest cockerel. If the bird has a ziptie on the leg, it is sold.

Can we have it in the Columbia Gorge? It's a beautiful area.
