Oregon Spring Poultry Swap April 23, 2011 in Canby!!!

Quote:
I have my last batch of 40 in the Brinsea set to hatch on Feb 28th. My fingers are crossed on this hatch - I have booted, frizzled and silkied from a farm in WA who got her stock from Jerry and Grady? We shall see....they are temperamental little things to hatch. I'm not candling this time till Day 18 and I'm keeping the humidity low like Jerry suggested.

ugh - don't tell me that! I've also heard that they tend to hatch early - have you seen that at all in yours?

Sorry! After I posted I kicked myself...but they are hard. I pop my eggs from my chickens in and they hatch at a 99% rater or better. I have been running at 50% on all my hatches (about 5 now) and I've been told that is great for shipped eggs on the Serama thread. Most people who have high hatch rates hatch their own eggs which is what I'm striving for next year. The shipping does them in I'm learning and it really doesn't matter how well they are packed. Candling is bad for them too it seems which is why I've stopped candling like normal. The less I touch them the better. Out of this hatch, I know I will toss half the eggs (about 15-20) and and maybe out of that I will get more than half to hatch and/or live. You have that whole lethal gene thing going on too. And nope, I've never had one hatch before 21 days. I've been reading up on that too and I don't think it's the norm as people tend to think. I've had just the opposite actually - more like 22 or 23 days but that could have been a temperature thing too with my LG. In the Brinsea, they pipped on Day 20 and hatched on Day 21.

Even with all the difficulties and the heartbreak of losing them (lol and the money I've lost - 14 chicks from over 100 eggs now), they are still so worth it. I love these little birds. They love to be around people - they need it actually - and they are so tiny! Zephyr is actually sitting on my head right now and my little blind one is sitting on my hand as I type! I'm just using it as a learning process - Hatching 101 Advanced LOL. I figure if I can hatch these I can hatch anything!

No, I'm glad you said it. It's good to know. Hopefully these will be ok with the shipping, they came from WA and were shipped express. Hopefully they were handled ok. There are 10 eggs, and I'll be happy as long as I end up with 2 girls. I don't care how many boys, or if any. The other good thing is the person I got them from will be at the next couple of shows I go to, so if they don't hatch, she'll bring me chicks.

I wonder if I can leave them in the turner and see anything with a flashlight rather than lifting them out to candle...hmm...well, if not, I'll just wait and not candle. Thanks!!

Mine came from WA too

Are they smooth or ? I was thrilled to find booted AND frizzled AND silkied from one seller. I've bought from 3 people now who swore they had frizzled - nope, not a single one - so I'm hoping this is the batch. Don't be scared, you will get chicks, you just might not get 10. If you do, I'm bringing all my eggs to you to hatch
lol.png
Will you bring any of the boys to the swap that you don't want? Oddly enough lol I might be looking for Serama roosters if I don't get what I want color wise. Since I'm only going to keep a couple boys (other than Zephyr), I really want some nice coloring and so far I only have black and white. I love them but I'd like something different if I can get it.

Black and white like mottled? Or solid black and solid white? Yeah, I'll let you know what I end up with. If I'm overrun with boys, I'll post pics and get rid of any you aren't interested in ahead of time.
wink.png
I don't want TOO many boys crowing in the house! LOL I know she has a silkied girl, but I don't think she's laying yet, and she has a frizzle girl too. I know it's not the same person though, because this was her first time shipping.
lol.png
Unless you picked them up...I got them from jbear. If you look her up on the user list and go to her blog (the link is in her sig line) and then click on "seramas" you can see the parent stock of my eggies! BEAUTIES!

btw...I love how you said a chicken was sitting on your head while you're typing, and it seems so commonplace, I didn't even feel the need to comment on it!

Oh yeah those are beauties! My black and white ones are going to be like that rooster I think but Seramas don't get their true colors till 6 months or later I think (?) so time will tell. I have a girl who is just the opposite - white with black. In this last hatch I'm pretty sure I got a mille fleur which is extremely exciting!

And yeah, chickens sitting on my head...shoulder...hands...just about anywhere is pretty commonplace around here

silkiechicken -
Want: Another watermelon goat milk soap!

Have:

Tomato: Roma, sweetie, gold nugget, early girl.

Vanilla Extract!!!

Real Madagascar beans from Madagascar and vodka! Not that ebay stuff from Paupa New Guinea and no sugar added to give off a fake sweetness. I've made them going by the federal minimum of about 14 ounces of beans per gallon of vodka, so there is about 3.5 beans per 4 ounce jar. Vanilla extract, not vanilla vodka. LOL $8 each or 2/$15. It is unfiltered and if you shake it up, you can get little vanilla specks in your baked goodies!

4 1/2 pint jars of low-sugar raspberry (no artificial sweetener)
3 pint jars of boysenberry apple
2 4 oz (small) jars of tomato orange marmalade (good!)
1 8 oz jar of raspberry

The oranges and apples came from the store, but the rest came from my garden.

Want -
I am leaning toward wanting cochins or silkies or wyandottes (I know - that doesn't narrow down too much)... not show birds; I just want pretty plummage in my backyard! I would love younger chicks, since I'd be quaranteening them for a month at least anyway... and likely in my garage/studio with a heatlamp, like I did with the six I have now... sigh... April feels too far away!

slurrywidow -
want
2 lg faverolles pullets (from cloverleaf)
2 lg ameraucanas pullets (from cloverleaf)
1 lf ameraucanas roo (from cloverleaf)

silkies -girl and boy- non show quality. Just some fun fluff for myself and my little girl.

1-2 marans pullets -- love the black copper and also the cuckoo

zanna -

I may have 4-6 FBCM roos, 5 1/2 months old by the meet that I would sell or trade for young FBCM hens that would compliment the roos I am going to keep. Not sure I can make the meet yet but I am going to try, I would really like to meet you all (I have been lurking but spending most of my time on the black copper marans discussion thread). My roos all look promising (Bev Davis lines), I just want to match the roos and hens to breed the best possible offspring and only want to keep one or two. I already have a 5 month old who is quite lovely, except no feathers on the legs . He may go also if one of the youngsters looks more promising. I could send anyone pics if they are interested.
