Oregon Spring Poultry Swap May 5, 2012 in Canby!!!

WANT: A faithfully broody hen (the one you want to get rid of...the one that's sweet but driving you nuts as she wants to brood eggs and mother chicks)...She will have a good home and lots of love.

...or a Chochin pullet/chick, or another breed you'd highly recommend as a "natural" frequent brooder.

Willing to pay reasonable $ but not a lot of money...this isn't show but for utility :-D

Why? I've decided I'd really like to try hatching and brooding the "natural" way

I'd hoped my broodier Buff Orpington would go broody again on me (she did her best in October to hatch the 3 ping pong balls in the nest box...held out the full 21 days), but alas I couldn't get her to brood for me this spring (even with salting the box with real eggs from the store) so I started another batch of chicks with the heat lamp inside for refreshing the flock this spring.

So...this year's swap I'd like to get a broody-type hen/pullet/chick that will brood for me next spring when I want to refresh my flock again for laying (I'l likely be putting in black sex-link eggs under her). I also want her to mother them (a good friend says what they hatch, they generally keep alive as long as they have a safe place)...hubby is building a separate spot in the coop that will be real pleasant for a broody hen with chicks.

So new fun experiment planned for next spring, therefore I don't mind a chick or pullet to purchase now.

Currently I have 9 hens (3 buffs, 1 RedSL, 1BlackSL, 1NHRed, 2RIR, 1Barred)...can't have a rooster where I live....and brooding 4 Gold Sex Links and 2 Black Sex Links chicks.

MAY BRING: May bring/swap out (if anyone is interested) my 3 feed store quality buffs...they are 1 year as of this mid-February...so 15 months by Swap. Lay well for Buffs (coming off of winter rest)..ok in temperament, but not super sweet...the sometimes broody one is fairly sweet...We, and our friends who we sell to, really like the big brown eggs from the Barred and Sex Links rather than the lighter Buff eggs.

Let me know if you would like to arrange a pre-purchase.

So, more swap oriented, sort of. Anyone know of someone "wanting" quaker parrots? It would be on a pet only basis as they are brother/sister so not allowed to "co pen". They are about 20 years and I am currently keeping them in flight pens but I know they'd love someone to love them and keep them in a house. Both talk a lot but both are cage aggressive. One is very friendly once off the cage, the other not as much. It would have to be to a approved home/I visit etc. Otherwise they'll continue to live out there days with me - figure we have lived half their lives together (they were hatched by my Grandmother 20 yrs ago and one was mine and I inherited the other at her death). They would also have to come back to me if not working out elsewhere, just wondering if someone was having a "bird need" other than chickens.

On a chicken note - moved my 13 ounce serama and "friend" buff silkie roo to a bachelor pad until rehomed/swapped/ or *sigh* old age. Why does a farm girl like me (who can butcher her big chickens) get so darned attatched to the pets. My grandpa would be horrified (but my Mom would have understood, lol). Just rambling, still hopin' to make the swap in May.

If anyone is interested I have a few lemon cuckoo orpington cockerels that are ready to go now. I will bring them to the swap in May, but if anyone is interested in them now they are ready to go. They range from about 5 weeks to 7 weeks in age right now. I am 99% sure of their gender at this point.

You can see pictures of my lemon orps in this facebook album http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.164732300281123.44831.156195471134806&type=3 . If anyone wants to see updated actual pictures of each little cockerel just ask.

I LOVE the LCO's I hatched from your eggs. I got a good male/female ratio (I think). The males already show barring. All of them are so pretty.

OK kind of trying to get a feel of how many of these I may need to make up. I will have them with me at Stevenson show and plan to have some at The swap at Canby. This no commitment but if I could get peeps to give me an idea if they may be interested I will try to have enough to go around. They are all hand made by me and my friend. They are $5 each 2 for $10 or 25 for $100 (that's $4 each). They come in several colors.

If you think you may want some please PM me so I can try to get enough made. Again there is no commitment.

They were quite popular at Monroe this weekend. I sold 25 in a very short period of time.

I am so glad to hear that your little orpingtons are doing well. I hatched out a few batches this spring myself and they are all healthy and growing well.....but I seem to have hatched out two boys for every girl!

So I have some little roos to find homes for....and I just recently got rid of my last extra rooster!

These guys have very nice light lemon color and are showing good cuckoo pattern. I have at least five available... Their mom is a terrific layer.
