Oregon Summer Poultry Swap, Redmond, June 18th

I'm not bringing anything to sell, but do have a shade canopy I would be willing to loan out if anyone needs one. I don't plan to stay all day, unless DS (16 months) agrees, but would be fine if someone local wanted to take responsibility to take it home with them and just hook up later to return it.

I'm so glad to see this swap is in full swing! I wish I could make it over, but I'm doing tennis tournaments with my son this month and our travel budget is shot

I haven't read all the threads but I saw the poster (love it!) and wanted to make sure everyone had the link to the Swap website? If it's listed somewhere, forgive me...I've been doing my daughter's graduation for the past few weeks and I'm a bit behind and loopy lol.

Wall Tenters, I plan on setting up a uber sturdy playpen for the pups (stands 4 feet high so most people can't reach over to touch the puppies), I do NOT like them being loose or kept on leashes during the entire time. They are only 9.5 weeks old right now and just starting their leash training but do very well in their play pen which weighs about 50-75 lbs., I also don't want a bunch of people handling them a lot, this is just good exposure for them with all the hubbub, activity etc., Thanks!

Seabreeze - Have you read the Harry Dresden series? I fell in love with the TM breed after reading about them in the Dresden books piqued my curiosity to research them a little. I don't have the room or time for a dog like that right now, but I will some day. I think they are absolutely gorgeous and have a very dignified quality to them. I would love to see your puppies, I know that they will probably be over- stimulated as it is, so I will just look, but it will be cool to see them in person. How did you get into the breed?

Oh, thank you!!

I don't smoke, so that's not a problem. I have a chair and card table, and it will be great to sit and chat (or table-sit so each of us can get out and look around). I really appreciate it!

I had planned on it anyway - like you, I buy/can in bulk, especially strawberries because when they're gone, they're gone. I don't have a brooder to hatch eggs, but if any of my hens looks broody just before the swap, I'll definitely consider it! I'm still a real newbie with chickens... learning as I go. Oh - but I see you're bringing tomato starts - I'd swap for those!

Yesterday, I replaced the roosts in the coop I'd built - because the chickens had cracked the 2x2! I had made it too long, and either the fatty Orps or the combined weight of all the chickens wanting the same perch made it crack.

But chickens don't like change -- you should have seen the fuss when they went in last night and it was different!

And since I'm such an experimenter, I've changed that coop several times since the Orps arrived last year... I'm probably making them all neurotic.

But this time, I used 2x4s and the roosts are rock solid.

How DARE you change the coop?!?! Yes, hens can be a fussy bunch! We only have one Dominique hen I would call really fussy - she's an old hen, and is rather cranky, she can be a bit rough on the younger hens and rules the roost for sure. It doesn't help that the rooster she's in with is a rather young guy, so I think she even controls him sometimes. I can just imagine her saying "SUNDANCE! Get in here and stand on this treadle! NOW PLEASE!". She's also a bit wild, and isn't as people friendly as the other hens, but we love her anyway. I think she's about four now but still is holding strong in her production - at the peak this spring she was doing 7/7, now I think she's probably down to about 5/7 or 3/5 something like that.

I think some of the current "fussies" are that the older hens have begun molting... they didn't do it over the winter, when they were less than a year old, but now I'm seeing feathers everywhere... and hearing a lot of scolding!

And they are getting used to the new pullets and letting me know they aren't thrilled with my decision. Oh, well!

Happy tap dance here. I have 6 newly hatched goslings. Their parents won't allow me to get any where close to them, so I have to admire them from a distance.

So, isn't that a fun way to bump up our thread?
