I have some pet quality d'uccles, for free, just come and get them. They are part of my color project. They free range during the day and turn themselves in at night. They are about five months old. they are raised inside the house by me, so they are used to humans handling them. Some may be laying already.

I live in Grants Pass/Rogue River area.

It's time for.... Stupid questions about eggs!!!

Hooray hooray we returned from a BBQ to find our first egg! Laid in the run. Boo. But all the straw is kicked around and out of the nest boxes. I suspect it's from Henny Penny our RIR. She was super ****** my husband disturbed her earlier today in the coop.

Questions:
Wow is this early? These are first week of march and last week of march girls. So essentially Easter eggs.

It was on the run floor and dirty. Cleaning advice please. And I know there are different opinions. I'd love to hear them. I do have two very young kids to keep safe though.

Will they learn to use the nest box?

It's small. They get bigger right? No bantams here.

So you found an egg, cool. Are you sure it was laid today? I ask because if it's just dirty because she was all afluster, then it will be an okay egg. If you are not sure how long it was there, i usually toss them.

About cleaning eggs. I don't. Unless they are extremely dirty, then I'll just feed them to the dogs, but for my customers, I don't wash- to keep the bloom on them. i also leave them on the counter until sold, as I have very little room in the refrigerator. You can keep natural eggs with the bloom on the counter for almost four weeks. The stores wash their eggs, so their is no natural protection, which is why we must refrigerate those store bought eggs. This is the way I do it. There will be several responses on other's methods.

The hen may use the box, but she's new at this and shouldn't be bothered at first. Later, once she's used to squirting out those giant things, you can bother them all you want.
Yes, the eggs will get bigger.

P.S-- I have lost about 8 chickens to predators in the past two weeks. darn! The raccoons I shot, but those hawks are pests.

I'm sure it was yesterday. We are out with the girls all the time with the kids. Husband had just given them some weeds and grass from mowing so it was on top of that. It really wasn't that dirty. I did wash it. I couldn't help myself. I had it just sitting on the counter. I guess I'll develop a thicker skin and a better mantra as I get more.

Her egg is so pretty. It's so much thicker than grocery store eggs! My kids are begging to eat it. I told them they have to wait and see if she lays another one today so they each get one!

I truly always wanted chickens as pets. The eggs weren't really a thought. But man is this cool!
