Howdy, from NoPo. We find ourselves with a wanna-be broody 1 year old. Black Jersey Giant, and not great timing as our current 5 are almost daily layers, often squabbling over the same nest box. and 5 i incubated this winter are almost ready to lay and appear obsessed with the same nest box.
Considering our alternatives. We'd prefer local hatching eggs if possible, if i can't break her of her nest fixation in the coming days. Anyone wanna buy a sweet Broody to raise your new flock additions? Wylie was raised mostly organically, no vaccines. Loves to scratch around under shrubs after laying, and stays close to flock mates. Talkative before she needs to lay and appreciates an escort to walk her to the nest. I have an Incubator which could be used as a backup. Wylie lays light brown eggs almost daily...but we have no Rooster. I don't know if she'd stay broody if re-homed and kenneled for quarrantine?
Meantime, Ill try breaking her of Broodiness...but idk how that will go. We have 2 separate corral areas now and could create a Brooder coop away from the kerfluffle zone.
Mixed feelings about this as i don't wanna lose sleep over another set of babies so soon after doing it 2x in the past year! Since i had to care for 9 inside the house Feb til. spring we are tired of having chickens in the house. If she's a crappy momma or abandons the eggs. I'd be on duty again LOL.
Anyway, I may be looking for Ameraucana, EE and other interesting (Polish, Lavenders, Welsummer, Brahma?) hatching eggs or female chicks SOON to put under her at night. Idk how long til a Broody might accept Chicks? What if she doesn't? ACK!
