These birds were used in older times for cockfighting. The males tend to fight to the death. However, today (at least here in the States), these birds are kept only for show and for preserving their rare bloodlines. These birds have unique genetic traits that make them an heirloom for the poultry world, and they are very disease-resistant and produce healthy crosses when bred with dual-purpose breeds. They are also some of the most ancient breeds of chickens in the world.

You have already rec'd a couple of answers. I'll try and explain more.

First, the Asil (one of the Oriental breeds) is the OLDEST documented breed of chicken in the world. Thus, from an historic point it is worth saving simply for that fact.

Second, we raise them simply because we like them. As other people do such things as RIRs or Rocks.

Third, many of us exhibit them.

Fourth, (remember this forum is global) these birds are still used in sporting events around the world where it is still legal: France, Middle East, Pakistan, India, all over the Far East, and many of the Pacific Islands.

I have a trio of shamos and I was attracted by their look and size. I have immensely enjoyed watching them and interacting with them. They are very interested in anything I am doing and if they hear me come outside they rush to see what I am up to. THey are very people oriented. They are the coolest chickens I have.
