Oriental Gamefowl Thread!

By "not game", do you mean they didn't have a tendency to fight, or that they didn't have the oriental posture (i.e. erect carriage, long neck and legs, etc.)? Either way, I appreciate the info, especially about Ideal's Sumatras. I came VERY close to buying some, but thank God you said what you said about them being small!

I want chickens that are big enough and game enough to defend themselves.

Here's some pics of my Spangled Russian Orloffs from IDEAL Hatchery

Gimli, my cockerel (so named "Gimli" because his dark beard reminds me of the Lord of the Rings character)

Lucy, my pullet (good posing here)

My two Orloffs next to a hatchery-stock Jersey Giant (I had trouble getting Gimli to pose and never actually succeeded)

I suppose you will have to take my word for it that Gimli normally exhibits his oriental heritage very well as far as posture is concerned. He loves to fight my other cockerels as well. Notable flaws I see in him lie mainly in his size and beard color (I assume he should be bigger at this age, and his beard should be almost completely white). Notable flaws in Lucy include poor feathering (thin, brittle, not complete), poor spangling, and a crooked beak. Aside from that, they're pretty Orloff-ish.

If anyone else has Orloff photos, please upload 'em here! Remember, Orloffs have oriental bloodlines, too.

Again, great stags! Did you sell that one or did you have to cull him? You said he was part Saipan--do you breed Saipans? I've been looking for a reliable Saipan breeder for awhile now.

Thanks you sir. No, I didnt sell him, I sold him to a local fellow that is using him for some project or other. He wasnt hatchery saipan, he was the real deal, or at least his mama was. I dont breed saipans, just working on the brazilians.

I like the cockeral's spangled neck and think his beard may get more white. We all have to start somewhere with what we've got and build on that. I know my two Aseel's form isn't correct for Aseels, but they aren't going to be used as pure Aseels anyway, only interested in their builds for breeding a cross. If you haven't looked, there's an Orloff thread, and probably more people there with knowledge of the breed than here. You mighy find some eggs or stock there.

Yeah, I suppose I shouldn't strive for complete perfection in these beginning stages

I guess that's why people breed chickens anyway: to preserve them and to breed out the flaws that are there. I like the cockerel's spangled neck, too. He's more spangled in general, to be truthful. His future mate has hardly any spangling, except some around her crop and belly.

I like those DC pics you uploaded! Great looking birds. Are those cockerels or pullets? I've been thinking about ordering some DC's from IDEAL, but am not sure what their quality is. IDEAL also sells Buff and White-Laced Cornishes, and I am particularly interested in the White-Laced.
