Remember not to look at his tail which was pluck by a nasty old hen.

Big Red is the product of a Blue Orpington Rooster over a Buff Orpington Hen.

The hen is from the lines of Jody (hinkjc) and Charlie (wilds of pa).

The origin of of the rooster is not specifically known.

Couldn't that very same breeding be done again with lots of eggs from that hen to incubate with hopes of getting a RED HEN? Then breed Big Red to the red hen and see what happens.

Also, what about breeding Big Red to his mother, or is that like too Oedipusy?

The hen and rooster he came from are no longer breeding. The hen and rooster are both in WV and I am in Va. I need another highway to get back to the main road with this color.

Big Red has been in my main layer house. I took him and my BO's that are laying and put them in a pen together. After 3 days of mating I am going to set a test egg tonight. Tomorrow is day 1.

Big red in the bator, was huge! He is a beauty and I am so anxious to hear the results of the hatch! Keep trying as these will be gorgeous and a welcome addition to the orp breed

I'd say the cross on buffs would be your best bet. Keep the darkest red colored pullets and breed them back to big red. You might also be able to get the pinkish white legs off a buff orp that way.

I think it breeding to black or blue, you are going to get pullets like the one TOH posted. Mainly blue or black, with some color to the breast/neck area.

Good luck! Keep us updated!
