Ostrich breeders

As for an ostrich pen, we have a makeshift one set up for when they arrive since it was sooner than expected. But with a couple days of hardwork we will be setting up posts and putting up 6ft fencing at an extra stable we had for cows originally. We will be making it as oval and long as possible since I've read that during mating season males can possibly kill the female in the corner of their pens. We won't be having any mating going on since they will only be 3 months old, but we just want to be on the safe side :)

OMGosh happy dance! Makes sense to build what you need so it'll be much less work making adjustments later on

as for a stable or barn, skip it. Ostriches do not seek shelter in rain or snow. They will look for shade during a hot day. The only purpose for having any shelter is to provide a dry area for feed and laying. They tend to lay near food and where it is dry. If this area is a stable that is inside the pen, that means you must go in here to collect the eggs. If you happen to have a particularly aggressive male, this is a recipe for disaster. Aggressive males will actively attempt to push you from their territory, mainly by kicking. There are ways to gentle the birds, and have this not as big of an issue, but ALWAYS safety first. If you have a lean-to type structure that is around 10x10 at the edge of the pen, and feed them there, this should give you a high chance of them laying right by the side of the pen making egg retrieval much easier.

I think raising ostriches is amazing, but don't ever forget these birds can easily kill you.
