ostrich egg???

I think you better be really prepared before you hatch out an ostrich. You also may want to find out if you are allowed to have them where you live and what you need to have them there, fencing wise.

Our neighbor had an emu named Sydney in with some goats and a 3-legged deer. They all got along famously and were very protective of each other. He did have a special permit. He eventually donated them all to a petting zoo about an hour's drive from here. Maybe you could find out if there is a zoo-type facility in your region that would take it.

only thing i can't have is pigs and roosters... that crowing is NOT coming from my yard.. what crowing.... that's a hen with too much testosterone....lol... animal control was sitting on my street...and i went over to ask if someone had filed a complaint.. and he said nope... i'm just sitting here killing time... you're fine....

i asked him about # of animals per acre, and he told me what it's sposed to be, and followed that with the fact that someone would have to complain before they actually came out to check.... my neighbor has had roosters for years... and we have the paecocks.. who don't make much noise right now, but april-ju;y.. OMG....

but yeah.. fencing wise, we're not ready and can't afford it... and i was reading in the ostrich thread... i think w/ kids w/ ASD, i'm probly better to not get something that could kill them if they have a spaz episode.. which they are esp prone too.. if i tell them no to the wrong ? you'd think they were watching their puppy get killed... and it sounds like ostrich startle easy... not a good combo... maybe once the kids get bigger... and move out... god i really hope they can move out.. i have high hopes for 2/3.. but the oldest, i'm not so sure about...

Hi Evonne. I have a little boy with an ASD as well so I hear ya on the meltdowns. It would be interesting to hatch one though. They have the prettiest eggs.

my oldest and my middle have aspergers.. well honestly, the 2 little ones haven't been diagnosed, but i'm smarter than your average bear.. and have dealt with it.. so i know what i'm looking at... the youngest, he's a little more complex... not exactly sure.. he may not get diagnosed with ASD, but we had complications.. and he's got some interesting quirks.. lol.. for hte most part though, he's my most stable.. even though he tends more to the emo side... he's more easy going than the other 2.. between the 3 of them and the animals there's never quiet.. what's the best way to shut up 6 2 week old chicks that can't see you and are throwing tantrums??

A note of caution here!

Talk to an ostrich breeder or read up on your ostrich behavior before you hatch one and find out it's a male.

Ostrich males go through a rut season, in which they become killers. An ostrich can kick you and kill you.

exactly why i'm saying i'm not ready for one now... lol... i do a lot of research before getting new pets to decide if they are right for me or not.. i want a commodore dog SSOOO bad... but i know i don't have the energy to keep one.. between just keeping htem active and then the grooming....

same with ostrich... i don't have the energy to raise one.. i would love to hatch one if i had a guaranteed home for it... the bird sanctuary out here would take it.. but they are self funded and have enough ostrich already.. lol..

like i said.. maybe one day when i don't have 3 kids taking all my energy... and my money.. lol...

it sure is fun to think about it though

Our grandson that we're raising was diagnosed with AS in July. He was misdiagnosed for years. He's great with our chickens and our parrots but not our furred animals. I wouldn't even want to see him with an ostrich!

One of our neighbors have an ostrich for predator control. We stay FAR away. Those things kick!
