We have a 4 yr old rooster that can't walk at all. It seemed to started a month ago; he was limping so we were soaking his feet in Epsom salt. It seemed to get a bit better until paralysis developed in both legs. He is eating and drinking and very alert. He was poopy cause he can't move out of the way. We thought it might be time to put him down and then after reading we decided to bring him inside in a big bin. I gave him a bath using dawn, used the blow dryer, and trimmed feathers around his pooper. :eek:We noticed lice and mites really bad. I applied DE carefully.

He slept after all that for about an hour. Then we gave him mineral/trace minerals, colloidal silver and, vet rx. He ate really well and drank quite a bit. His legs are both warm and were under him tonight but not functional. 20211229_113629.jpg 20211229_144048.jpg

Any ideas on what might be going on and what else to do for him?

Also what should we use to clean the coop and get rid of bugs?

He might be able to walk after you get rid of the bug this makes them weak so this is most likely why..dont give up on him yet...for your coop use permethrin spray also add garlic to there water. 1 clove of garlic per 4 gallons

I have heard that DE is useless in the case of an infestation. I have also heard that permethrin dust is more ideal and can (most times) get the job done, so I would highly recommend trying permethrin dust to help with the mites. As for the other things, I have tagged a few very helpful members that may be able to help you.

The problem could be weight loss and/or malnutrition caused by mites and lice, but I kind of doubt that is the whole story. For the insects you need to use a powder with the active ingredient of permethrin. DE is not going to cut it. All the flock should be treated, as well as the coop, nest boxes, etc. after all bedding has been removed and burnt.

Once you treat the bird, a good poultry vitamin supplement should be given according to directions on the wrapping.

Thank you so much for the info. I guess I really am a hatchling 😅. We will go get permethrin. Have you heard of or used Elector PSP?

Please get some photos of his legs and feet, bottom of feet as well.
What do you feed? I would get some poultry vitamins into him. Poultry Cell is a good choice, 1cc per 3 pounds of weight once a day for 3-4 days.

I see a small wound to the foot, long spurs - possibly the wound is from the opposite spur?

Not sure what else may be going on with him. But, he may just be failing from something else and the lice/mites are the result.

Yes- and those spurs definitely need to be removed/trimmed!
