We built our chicken run from nearly all recycled/ free materials. The tin for the roof was free. The summer ground feeder is a roof cap. The support posts are spruce trees from our forest. The cladding on the coop is untreated pallets. The nest boxes are milk crates and our old kitchen cabinets. We have an enclosed entry door that was a door from inside our home that we didn’t need. There’s glass windows in frames given to us for stopping wind and snow by the entrance too. The floor of the pen is twigs, leaves & branches put through our shredder. I grew green beans and hop bines over the middle of the pen for summer cover from the heat. Roosts are made from two antique ladders.
we spent some money on the coop lumber supports etc but saved thousands of dollars in total. The pen is 14 x 32 feet. And they have another free run area 10x bigger. We put pallets into A frame designs & covered them with recycled tin. This way, the hawks don’t get them when they’re in the bigger uncovered outdoor run. Hard work but worth every penny.

Looks like you did a great job providing for your chickens!

From the flag I'm guessing you are in Canada. Does it snow much where you live? I'd be concerned about the snow bringing down the chicken wire over the run. I had cattle panels hooped over some blueberry bushes, attached to T posts all the way to 5' off the ground. It was about 6' wide and 7' tall. I put chicken wire over it to keep birds out. We had a wet snow that turn the hoops into M shapes.

We did our entire coop and run with repurposed wood (we did have to buy about 5 pieces) this year too!
So satisfying isn’t it. We did buy the chicken wire. That wasn’t too pricy here but now there is a severe shortage!

we get tons of snow here in Alberta Canada. It’s winter for 7 months🤣. The wet snow comes in March/April when it starts to get warmer but otherwise it’s extremely dry snow & temps of -20 and below. I use a hand leaf/snow blower to get rid of snow on ledges and roofs.

Then you know you'll need to get under the run wire and "vibrate" off the snow before everything, including the wire, is on the ground. Had I even noticed the snow on the blueberry hoops I could probably have kept the problem from happening. Clearly I am just not paying attention since I can see it from the living room window.

Yes indeed. Prevention is way better than cure, in my humble opinion.
