Since you asked.... One morning last year just at dawn, Herbie jumps up from his bed beside ours in the Master Bedroom and walks rather quickly out to the front window and starts barking with his "something is wrong" bark. So I got up and followed him - this was unusual as he gets up when we do. He wanted out so I let him out the front door and he went to the middle of our front yard and kind of went on point towards the northwest. He just stood there and kept up that bark so I kept looking hard through the desert to see if some odd animal might be there, like the folks who live about 3 miles from us have Emus and they occasionaly get out and come this way! Remember, we dont have neighbors close up. Our town has a minimum 5 acre lot size and most folks have more. Anyway, over the trees starts rolling black smoke about 20 acres over. Herbie smelled the smoke from inside our house before it got 30 feet in the air! I called the Fire Dept and within 10 minutes a news heleocopter was over head. It took about 15 or 20 minutes for the first fire truck to arrive.
It was kind of a mess because we live in an area surrounded by mountains, the road is a single lane dirt road and everyone either hauls their water or has a well. Someone was smart enough to call for the water delivery Co. to have extra water trucks waiting at the end of the road. They hold 2500 gallons where as a fire truck only holds 500. No firehydrants in our area - heck we don't even have water lines!
Herbie saved the day again because the neighbors were still asleep when the fire broke out so their first thought was to get their children then pets out then get to the barn to save the horses because the fire was spreading so fast. It was electrical so they couldn't even call for help cause their phones were out.
Their house was a total loss but everyone was safe and the whole desert didn't burn down. The fire dept was able to contain it to just a few acres. I guess my call was the first one in to 911 - All because of good ole Herbie!!!
