Our First Broody and Incubator Hatch: a Diary

Uh oh your first molt? My first was last year loose feathers unending... oh and they had bad attitudes towards each other and pecked alot at roost time poor babies

They didnt like the feather fixer it smells bad so I'm gonna do like you are @igorsMistress and add more protein, including chick starter

I wonder if my ee's will make molt this year they are end of January babies

I think that they will. I've read before that those hatched before Feb. will molt in that fall, but those hatched after don't until the next year. Might have to double check on that, though!

Yeah,maybe... guess i'll see, though my thoughts are they wont this year maybe bc ee's are slow growing but who knows? They did start laying at 4 months... :)

Thanks for the information on feather fixer, I'll stick to my plan then.

I dunno about molt for your ee's they hatched about the same time as my older girls. I had a few feathers but nothing crazy

Eh...maybe. There's really no hard and fast 'rule'. I've read stories, and had one, about 8-9 month olds molting their first winter. Some birds will molt in August, some wait until December.

The name 'Feather Fixer' is a marketing ploy. Yes, it has higher protein(~18%?)than most layer feeds but still has laying status calcium levels(~3-4%), so not a good molt feed IMO. When it first came out it touted itself to have a proprietary external parasite killer, that was pushed hard in the advertising...come to find out the 'proprietary' ingredient was sulfur, which is in many feeds anyway. They stopped advertising that attribute after awhile. Always read the fine print on the tag sewn into the bottom of the bag. ;)

The weather has changed, supposed to be 112* today :barnieThis is what I've done for Ruby and CO, monitoring
