Our Mixed Flock Journey!

My husband told me that he had to put one of my BO hens back in the pen today...moving the feed containers didn't work! I gave the rest of my chicken wire to my friend to help her with the expense of building her coop, but she has decided that she can't get chickens right now, so she will be returning it to me! My husband said as soon as I can get it back he will fix it so that they can't get out! I'm thinking about trimming their wings, but don't know if that will be enough to keep them from flying up on the hutches, not sure I want to take the chance of them being unable to fly, but have still them getting out of the pen!

I treated myself to an egg collecting basket...the price was right & I like the looks of it! One of my girls laid a light cream colored egg, so another great addition to my color basket!

It's actually the one in the middle, the white looking egg at the bottom is actually blue, but kind of washed out in this picture!

I need to take pictures outside, the colors come out much better! Same eggs as above!

I would consider wing clipping as LAST RESORT.:old.. I'm not physically at your grounds, so kind of difficult to give specific advice. I would try every option to block the landing on top of those hutches. Here is something that crossed my mind.
The playhouse is only to represent your hutches.

fishing line safety.PNG

The vertical things in BLACK ink represent wood furring strips like 1" x 2"
The RED and BLUE lines represent fishing line stretched around the 4 uprights.
Chickens would attempt to land on roof, but fishing line would prevent them from making a landing. They would not be able to see the fishing line as a barrier. :idunno
Sorry about my sloppy artwork, It was free-hand drawn with my mouse. :hit

I don't want to clip them either and only clipped the other hens wing because I thought she was flying over the fence!
It's awesome...I couldn't even begin to accomplish what you did! Dale is adding a section of fencing on the pen wall, made of chicken wire, I think it will be about 36 inches tall, hopefully that will take care of the problem, they will have to be very determined to get over it! If not, we might have to try something like this! I discovered another launch point this afternoon and removed it! One way or another I will keep these silly girls safe...whether they like it or not...lol! I also think we are going to remove the temptation of the remaining grapes on top of the pen!
Thank you so much for taking the time to draw this up! 💞

Today's egg basket of 10 actually 11 if we count the broken and eaten egg! Most of the eggs are still under 50g, hoping they will get larger!

We got our first egg on July 28th! Totals so far for August & July 118 eggs! I do believe I'm finally getting enough eggs Debby...lol!

I haven't had a jumbo egg in a couple of days...that girl deserves a break! :)

8.31.2020 Total eggs today 11, one broken so 10 in Basket.jpg
