Our Mixed Flock Journey!

This is my girl on her nest.

And the eggs she's managed to accumulate. She hasn't set them yet so wasn't ready to sit.
Last time she managed to secrete 10 before I busted her but that was really only because she'd gone to sit & I couldn't find her anywhere.

These days I'm a little more suspicious when I don't see an egg from one of my regular layers for a few days.

The outside nest I rob then destroy. My Campine gives me the filthiest look but it seems to do the trick. The coop nesters I try a couple of things. I remove all the eggs quickly. I found my smallest bantam covering 7 standard size eggs & she was not happy to see them removed. I ruffle up the nests & put the girls in the run with some distractions. If all else fails they go in broody jail. This is a small coop but all access to the nesting boxes is blocked off & they tend to spend a day or 2 pacing & squawking @ me before returning to normal.

Oh my gosh, I would love to see your Campine give you a filthy look, that must be hilarious! I remove my eggs on throughout the day when I'm home...when I'm not, I don't think my son brings them in until the evening! I need to hurry up and get my fencing completed so that I can get that girl out of jail, I might need it! Hopefully I will be picking up the new fence material on Thursday!

Now I'm a little torn as to whether or not I should leave the eggs longer or just keep pulling them out so that she's not tempted to sit! As I think about it, I think with me not knowing what's going on with her, I will go ahead and leave some eggs and if she decides to sit I will try to break the broodiness afterward, but I will know a little better what I can expect from her!

Most people on here call me Jeannie. My actual name is Jehane ~ which no~one knows how to pronounce. I tell them it's like the French J' followed by an arn sound ~ so J'arn.

That's amazing! How does she get them into the nest, or do your other hens start laying there because she is?

I've really got no idea. I've never seen her do it. I assume she lays over days until she has all the eggs she wants then proceeds to manoeuvre the eggs into position so she can cover them all & turn them before proceeding to sit. I'm also assuming someone else liked her nest enough to lay there too. The brown egg's definitely not hers!

It was hilarious. She didn't see me do it but Campines are smart. She knew! She snuck of to her hidden nest then pulled up short when she realised there was not a single egg left in it & shot me the dirtiest look over her shoulder!
