Wow. You've got a lot on & you're not even there for it! Glad your hen is out & about again. It's so worrying when their behaviour goes odd.

Yeah, it's been kind of crazy lately & we are going on a short trip with Dale's sister and her husband. We're leaving on Tuesday & won't be back until Friday...not a good time for me to go anywhere, but we've already committed! I don't know what to do about an egg eater, when I'm home, which I usually am, I will try to get it figured out!Wow. You've got a lot on & you're not even there for it! Dale didn't have the material needed to build a new nesting box, so he is using something else he put together, probably cardboard. He's going to bring in the larger kits at 9:30, in the hopes that she will have fed them by that time. That will give the smaller kits an opportunity to nurse in the morning! I'm amazed that they are all still alive!
I was told that when you force the doe to nurse the babies that she doesn't clean them & help them eliminate so you have to do it with a warm damp cloth. I shared this information with Dale leaving out the damp cloth part & told him the doe usually licks them clean & asked him if he was ready to help those babies get things moving...he didn't think I was as funny as I thought I was...They're doing good so far!
Evidently my husband doesn't count as carefully as I do, it looks like we lost 2 babies probably yesterday. They were the ones that we were having the hardest time getting to eat, even when placed on the doe. I think she just didn't have enough milk. I wish I would have been home, but I don't know if it would have made a difference. I now know what to do if we have another litter like this one. He made a closer inspection today & said that tummies looked full. Hopefully we won't lose any more.
Thank you Debby, I really wasn't surprised. If we get that many again I will have a better game plan!Sorry about the 2 that were lost Rene. With a large litter like that, maybe it was inevitable. Glad to hear the others seem to be doing well and thriving![]()
Aaawwww, so sad! I would have loved to see what it was!Yeah, it just showed up! We think it got separated from one of the neighbors hens. Sadly it didn't make it, we think it had been on its own for too long & it possibly had some injuries that we couldn't see.![]()
Mine did NOT need eggs to be broody!! I had five at a time sitting for weeks on empty nests!Dale told me that my BO has finally quit hanging around inside the coop! She was starting to come out more before I left. I'm so relieved & really think she was being a bit broody, even though she never sat in a box, maybe that's because I pick up the eggs so quickly...silly girl!
He also told me he found an egg that had been pecked open & eaten in the pen. I'm pretty sure it's my escape artist, but at this point it's just a guess.
