Our Mixed Flock Journey!

I find my Seramas to be as hardy (health-wise) as any of the other girls. Gorbie in my Avatar, she went MIA after a group of rowdy neighborhood kids were chasing playfully my flock to KINGDOM COME. I put an end to that behavior, but was not able to find Gorbie that evening. :hit ,, Years later I did find remains, and it was Gorbie's as she tried to hide away, and not able to squeeze back out:(
My second Serama died of a respiratory disease, along with 2 other hens. I was worried that I would loose the whole flock. The sight was not pretty,,:old
Mareks is a common widespread disease. My understanding is that there are a few breeds resistant to it. I don't think any of the hens that I keep are resistant.
In over 20 years , I have never encountered it in my flock.

DW cooks up a pot of chicken soup just about every week. No,,,,, I don't cook my chickens:frow,,,, I would be out of chickens in no time.
I'm terribly sorry about Gorbie. That had to be distressing. :hugs :hugs

Good morning! I just got off the phone with my friend who has the Red Star aka ISA Brown chicks! I will be getting 2 from him next week! They are fully feathered and will be almost 7 weeks old when I pick them up! I will have them in the enclosed pen mini coop area during the day for the next couple of weeks, it will be nice when we frame that in, I just don't know if that will happen by then...they will be able to see and interact safely with the older chickens! I want to move them into the coop each night, but I need to figure out how to safely accomplish that! I might try to fit the the dog kennel that I got from my son in there! I will set up the little roost that we have for them inside of it or I could even block off one of the nesting boxes and move them back and forth from there as that is easy for me to access...the downside to that is I don't want them to think of that as their sleeping space when they are older, but this would be the easiest option! Decisions, decisions...lol! I'm excited, I think they will be a nice addition to my flock as far as egg laying goes!

I still have plans to hopefully get a couple of Cream Legbars and a Blue Andalusian (thank you Debby @N F C for telling me about them) and possibly an Ameraucana next spring! I would love 2 of each...there is plenty of room in the coop and with the large pen area we can accommodate these additions...chicken math...lol! Especially since we will be thinning out the rooster population!

My first flock were rescue ISAs. :)

Most people seem to use a dog crate but I dont have a dog so...
I bought an extra dog-crate just for my birds. I find it very helpful. I got a large one. I already had a spare medium crate. It really helps when I need a “hospital ward” for a sick bird or temporary living arrangements for them.

That’s really awesome! I have two ISA Browns who are now 10 weeks old. They are looking so pretty and they are very energetic and entertaining. I am looking forward to lots of EGGS!!!
