Out of curiosity, what would be better for a horse? Update! Post# 28

Actually we probably have most of the materials already on the farm in one outbuilding or another. Just Keith can't do that kind of physical labor anymore, at least without help. He's still dealing with the blood clots from his accident at work last year. He's just trying to make it through until he can retire next April.

k, it's settled then.....

Name the day, I'll be there. Keith can supervise. Seriously, a 3 sided shelter with a tin top would be fine at least for now. That's all our horses had when I was growing up.

Anybody else wanta help? hint hint?

I'm in. I'm a girl...but I've built fences and such with the best of the boys on our farm growing up.

Tin roof and 2 walls of stacked hay/straw bales will do fine until you can afford walls. Horses need to be able to get out of the wind when they are wet and it is cold. Otherwise, most prefer to be out all the time. Waterproof blankets are nice when it is snowing-- helps keep them dry in the cold. Otherwise, generally not necessary at all.

I'd come help.... and hammer a couple of thumbs besides my own... if we weren't so far away

I sure hope they accept your offer Grit!! If necessary, you could try the carrot and a stick... money in one hand and phone to your best buddy at the closest humane society in the other (want our number? Haha!).

Sigh... I've been avoiding mentioning this... but you're sure to be jealous so I have to. My boys name, Anacobero, is supposed to mean 'Imp'.
I try to avoid remembering this when I'm baby talking to him

I agree I'd start low, and I am also in AR and he should be fine w/ only trees for shelter. It just doesn't get that cold here, their coats generally give more then enough protections (this is assuming he's in good weight going into Winter). I'm sure he'd appriciate a shelter when you can afford it, but he should be fine until then.

That horse would probably be happy with anything including a nice word now and then. I dont have a horse at this time but I do have 2 burros and a few goats most of the time they are standing out in the rain eating and looking around instead of being in their sheds.

That poor horse needs your love and good food and vet care. Good luck, wish I was closer to help build a shed, I dont do to well with straight walls but they are built to last, just dont try and measure them.

God bless you for wanting to save one of God's creatures.

I approached the owner about buying the horse. He said he won't sell, for any price.

I am going to keep pestering him about it all winter. The horse is already getting skinny, because there is very little hay available around here right now and what there is for sale is sky high.

Keep pestering him, and every time you see his weight decrease offer again. I would call in every time he lost weight, or he had nothing to eat. If he approached by the authorities enough, he might sell.

I would def. give him some type of shelter to block the wind, but he would okay for awhile. My horses only had a lean-to and they barely used it, unless it was pouring down rain. In the winter I put blankets on them, but you have to be careful, those blankets can get caught up on stuff, but I am sure a horse is strong enough to just rip the blanket and free themselves.

Like my FIL says: Everything has a price, you just have to be willing to pay it (or take it in these peoples case). Get the Sheriff after them again right when you know they're low on money if you can find out, then approach them again.

Belive me, they're considering your offer even if they are saying they wouldn't sell for any price...
