He was, but so are all of the other antagonists on outlander. However, I tend to like the antagonists in tv shows and movies who don't play the blaring obvious evil black souled villain, but still cause that friction that keeps the protagonists on their toes. Without antagonists that cause chaos and resistance to the plot movies and tv shows would be pure vanilla. Just my opinion though is all.
