Oyster shell and rubber eggs

Lots of poultry items sold these days aren't necessary. People are keeping poultry more as pets these days instead of food so they feel better doing extra, but unnecessary stuff for their birds.

Makes sense. I’m likely one of them ie feeding bananas. And while it does make me feel better- thanks to you and this post- I now know it’s probably not the best idea for my birds. Crossed it off my shopping list. Thanks!

Well occasional bananas can be okay, but I would limit them. My turkeys love Black oil sunflower seeds but I have learned the hard way that they should be limited. It still is fun to have birds excited to see their favorite snacks, especially turkeys which I swear jump up and down like excited kids when they want something. :)

Just curious. What are some of the other unnecessary fads out there right now if you can think of some? Aside from ACV and bananas of course. :ya

They do! And you’re right. If you don’t mind if I ask- when you say you learned the hard way- what happened?

Fermenting feeds comes to mind. People wanting to mix their own feeds like they are somehow better than what's out there. Poultry vitamins are mostly unnecessary if you feed a good fresh ration. Worming birds routinely is another I don't agree with, and of course antibiotic use. I could get in trouble listing this stuff. :)

Some of the young toms we butchered we internally greasy, than I had a hen prolapse, which is often caused by internal fat. Since I have cut back on the boss they are a bit healthier I think. You can't necessarily tell if stuffs going on internally until you get a look inside, or lose birds.

Nah. Who cares about trouble. We’re ALL here to learn. My ears and eyes are wide open. Hungry for knowledge! By all means... keep going!

I personally don't treat illness here and we cull as necessary. My birds are healthy and happy. Birds also need plenty of room to move and fresh air. No bringing in random birds with random diseases, and keeping things as stress free as possible which often includes removing excess males.

I think people complicate poultry keeping. That's about all I got. :)
