thanks for your ideas! She pecks SOME but is not able to eat/drink on her own. I do have frozen grapes. I'm going to try that! I just wet her down in the tub again. I've had a fan on her, and I've fed her while holding a sm. ice pack (for kid's hurts) on her back and she started to shiver.

I think the fever is getting to her. I've been feeding her a week now and she fought it when she was REALLY sick. She's starting to fight it again.

I'm going to go cut some frozen grapes.

Thanks so much!

stephpaige, thanks so much for that information. I'm not sure that any of those are the issue. She has no diarrhea since I put her back on grower feed, only an occasional one. I just have no idea what's going on. It started out looking like wry neck but then her feet were affected and I thought perhaps Mareks. She's regaining strength in the feet, can stand, walks some, the neck she has almost full movement in but I think it's not controlled well when she's pecking for food, OR she falls into the food because she's not steady on her feet yet. Such a dramatic improvement, just need to get this fever down.

I'm burning out. I've been glued to the home and caring for her nonstop! At this point I doubt she'll be put back with the flock. If she makes it we will be buying chicken diapers and calling her a pet.

Next time you are going to the store, you might consider getting an antibiotic that you can give her, should you need it. I wouldn't say to treat without knowing (or suspecting) something specific. But since Murphy is alive and well, you will need it at midnight and not be able to get it.

Be encouraged. You are doing a great job. (Gives a hug)

What a great lesson for your kids about sacrifice and compassion.

And when you are getting 3+ eggs a week, you will be reminded about what a great investment you made into this little bird.

re vit. supplementation:
Please note that vitamin E (at therapeutic dosage) is absorbed only in combination with selenium (the two are interdependent on each other)... if there is a malabsorption issue in general this will also affect absorption and therefore it is a good idea to give a general supplement like Avia Charge 2000 ...
Vit A (in excess ) will negatively affect uptake of vit E so you should not use the Polyvisol in combination with the vitamin E/selenium as a general rule.

It could be a vitamin def because she was sick before. I would try the Avia Charge 2000. I hope she feels better soon. I lost my 4 year old hen last Tuesday, I know how frustrating it can be to figure this stuff out

A plain old bottle of water put in the freezer to freeze solid, then put in the cage with your "hot chick" is a good idea for helping her keep down the temps. I would also crush up a baby aspirin/low dose aspirin & mix into its water or syringe if it can't drink on its own. The aspirin is an anti-inflammatory as well as a fever reducer and pain reliever, so it might help bring the fever down. The chilled watermelon actually sounds like the best idea, since chickens tend to cool off via the digestive tract (drink a lot of cool water, expel a lot of hot poop). If you can get her to eat any it will also help with keeping her hydrated (feverish or hot from environment, hot chix need a lot of water). The cool baths are an excellent choice. Have you taken her temperature to see how high the fever is?

I'm really surprised but she is cooling down! I gave her some frozen grapes and cooled her down in the tub again. She has remained cooler. This little bird is SUCH a fighter! I can't believe how far she's come. I truly believe she's going to make a complete recovery!
