I used pine shavings over newspaper to make the brooder easier to clean the first week. The newspaper had to go when the Wyandottes began shredding it for fun.
The shavings produced dust all over my house. At three weeks the brooder went to the garage where I use shavings mixed with alfalfa. It was recommended to me by the farm supply in our area. They love picking out the greens and flowers. Keeps them entertained. Less dusty too.
I kept marbles in for first two weeks so they couldn't stand in their water. Had to clean out the waterer every few hours; it was full of shavings. Very time-consuming. When I took the marbles out, I put the waterer up on a 2"X4" wood piece. It stayed much cleaner. Now, with chicks at 5 weeks, it is up on a couple of bricks placed side by side. They like getting up on it to drink and it stays much cleaner.
