I just bought a baby parakeet today. Three days ago I adopted a three year old female. I put them together and they’re fine, except for the baby. His breathing is very strange. It sounds like he puffs in and out fast each time he breathes, and you can hear him breathe. I’ve heard parakeets naturally breathe fast, but somethings wrong. I’m not sure what to do.

A video with the breathing would be helpful to members that know parakeets, I am not such a member, sorry, although I could have my dad look at the video

Edited to say that my dad raised parakeets for pet stores back in his day so he might know what the problem is

well.... that sounds bad.

So, you need to decide if you want to wait it out, see if he recovers... or take him to a vet.

Parrots hide symptoms until they are ready to keel over and die.

Labored breathing like what you described is never normal. It can be caused by various things... virus, bacteria, or fungus.... so..... a vet visit. Sorry.

:goodpost:
Basically the sane thing my dad said without a video:oops:

that does not sound good. Not sure why there is that rasp in there.
I was thinking it was just because of the stress of him getting put into a new cage, but it doesn’t seem like it. When he’s doing something like sitting on my finger or cleaning himself the breathing is normal. But when he sleeps he starts to breathe heavy again.
