Partridge is penciled, not laced. The gene is dominant, so does not hide, but it does require an e^b based bird rather than E or E^R.

Some birds show penciling from day one, others only show it on mature plumage.

Thanks Sue for the info. My line of birds take a while for the color to finish.

I have a gorgeous henny feathered blue partridge cock whose extensive penciling did not show until he was nearly a year old. When I purchased "her" she was almost completely blue, showing a tiny bit of red. I was ill for several weeks with my family caring for the birds. Once I was well enough to make the rounds to at least see how the birds were, I discovered that my pretty blue pullet had turned into a blue partridge cockerel!

Well this blue hid partridge like a white would, I'm telling you. He would ONLY throw partridge type colored babies, from red toned blues, to nice blue partridge, to true 'regular' partridge. even bred to a blue - I would not get blue nor splash from him. and he had NO leakage what so ever as he hit 2 years old, so he wasn't a blue partridge.

On a different note. I let the silkies out in the barnyard and my baby turkey poult came over to eat with them. She was soo sweet with them but, the silkies couldn't help but, look at the turkey says: "the the heck is that big giant thing?" "Why is it eating with us?" It was kinda funny to hear them squacking and bauking to eachother!

beautiful coloring mine are not anywhere as dark as he is

Very interesting, thank you all. Maybe in a few more weeks, he will have more color in. Glad the comment was made about male crests too. He was on the "potential cull" list due to a lesser crest and beard. Checking him out the other day, he has quite a few pin feathers on his head, so like you've all been saying, wait. Other than that, he is a pretty typey guy, and is so full of himself, yet sweet. And...he can see!

I moved their water pan the other day, only 2 feet mind you, and they stood there for the longest time looking at the indent in the ground, like: "hey, the pond dried up, where's the water??"

Little BP found it, and spread the news...silly birds.

I know I just want his crest to balance out his huge looking beard!! lol:gig He reminds me right now of a balding man with a big bushy beard

sorry not trying to offend anyone in describing him. But, seriously he looks like unbalanced. Have you ever felt that way before on your juvie cockrels?

He is still young yet, but boys don't need as big a crest as the girls anyway.... Makes it easier for them to find the girls!!!! LOL
