Partridge Silkies - Nothing else

I wait till my breeder has 6month old sexed silkies before I buy, can be a bit more frustrating with handling but patients gets it done. Of course my son picked the meanest craziest pullet available she will attack my young tots omg. and older tots hate her cuz she so mean. My older BR and Partridge silkie get along with her but unfortunately I have to keep my BR with all the babies and newbies because she is so good with everyone while still establishing pecking order She top hen!

Please don't tell me the mean crazy pullet is a Silkie!!!

Also - 6 months? Is it really possible to sex a Silkie at 6 months? Do they lay that early?

Hmm... maybe the breeder made an "error" in her sexing and you have a crazy rooster? I have heard of a crazy Silkie rooster before...

I like a "mommy" bird to tell everybody how to behave too, its why I love Silkie broodies. Chicks with moms to teach them manners and what to eat and how to do things.. they are just happier, healthier chicks. Having the mom un-afraid of people so you can handle the chicks makes them tame to catch too... love them!

Unfortunately my pullet is a silkie she is okay with my son and I but the smallest little girl is the meanest to many a bird but we love her and thank goodness for craigslist for the free coop we got for her and or partridge silkie. She lays as well. She can jump and get some height for a silkie too, so don't make her mad she will get in your face! She thinks she can fly!

Wow, really doesnt sound much like a silkie, wonder if she is a cross ? I have some that are more friendly than others but have yet to have a mean one. On occasion I will have a "naughty" Cockerel that has a bit of attitude until he grows up but I cant say in all the silkies I have had there has been a mean hen :( I have never had one fly up in my face..

Hmm.. the only "mean" bird I have that even remotely resembles a Silkie is a Sizzle (Silkie x Frizzled Cochin I think). I have heard the Showgirls are more aggressive, and I suppose you could breed out the NN gene but leave the aggression. But my Sizzle is mean to the other chickens and not to me although she is afraid of me. I think I have a Frizzled Slikies and a Sizzle growing up from her, I will see if they inherited their mom's temperament since I am handling them more than I think she was handled.

I have a few Silkies that like to try and fly too - and one that sleeps on the high roost at night with all the rest of the bantams - and flies down in the morning. Well, ok, not really flying - more like semi-controlled gliding/falling...

with lots of flapping...

I have noticed that sometimes the smallest bird is the most aggressive (and dogs, and people

..) They have to work twice as hard to be on top - so that's how they do it.

I am glad you found a place she can be comfortable and not have to attack all the other birds.

I hatched out twelve Catdance Silkie chicks of mixed colors a few months ago. Today it was sunny and 68 degrees outside so I bathed the two Partridge girls and gave them a quick blow dry. Then it was time to play in the garden.

They are not three months old yet. Such nice little girls. They finally had enough of me and posing and decided to make a break for it. I gathered them up and took them back to their flock mates.

I'm curious after looking at pictures in this thread of all the beautiful Partridge birds. My two little pullets don't seem to have any black. When my Catdance eggs came, these eggs were marked 'P' for Partridge. Could these two chicks be Blue Partridge?

I don't have a Partridge male but I have a Self Blue male and a male that is very pretty dark dark Blue. He almost looks Black. His egg was marked 'BLS'. I am thinking it stands for Blue Split.

My question is this to anyone that can answer...If I wanted to continue with a Blue Partridge project pen, is it a good idea to use one of those cockerels with these two pullets? They are all beautiful chicks with a lot going for them.

These are gorgeous babies Mumsy. As soon as I saw them I thought what beautiful blue partridges they were. I am not an expert by any means, but I would think using a dark blue would deepen the blue coloring and the self blue would lighten it. I struggle with the genetics side of things but maybe you could use that chicken color calculator to help.

Quote: They do look like they might be Blue Partridge, or Silver Partridge. One girl looks like the gold/partridge color - the other looks more silver to me but with a red head??? I would wait until they grow up more, maybe their next molt will look more standard Partridge colors.

The answer to the rooster question depends on what you want to work on. Both the Self Blue (lav based blue) and the dark Blue (Bl based Blue) will give you black or blue chicks.

The Self Blue will add that they are a Split and carry the lav gene which can make line breeding a mess because some of them will be self blue (if two copies) and some may be what you are aiming for, only those may or may not carry lav also.. and I don't think Partridge is a good base for Self Blue... too much red leakage (which will turn gold). The partridge will probably be hidden completely and would take line breeding to produce Partridge. You will also mess up the colors you have there already.. it might be hard to get them back as nice.

If you wanted to work on Blue Partridge you could use the dark Blue boy, just understand that your first generation may not show any Partridge - and you wouldn't want to use the girls from that cross - only the best looking boy over the Partridge girls.

An easier way would be to keep an eye out for a nice Partridge boy. Since chances are 50/50 of getting boys, and most people want to keep more girls than boys - they are available. The lady I got my pair from had some boys available from them. You may also be able to find somebody closer to you.

She's a purebred definitely but a purebred that will obviously not be breed, I think she only likes silkies and barred rocks LOL. But she is happy. I had two partridge silkies but there was a dog attack so I'm left with one Apri and my mean silkie is a white one my son's choice. I really want another Partridge silkie though, I'm hoping in the next few months I can get another pullet, so the silkie coop has at least three girls and not just two.
