What a cutie! I love the "little chipmunks"! I wasn't sure I'd like the Partridges when I first got mine, but I find them quite lovely in color and even their personalities seem friendlier. Mine are now 6 weeks old, and I'm starting to see a lot of red coloring coming in, as in many roos??

Wouldn't be the first time, I seem to be the Queen of Roos, but that's ok, I love the boys! Congrats on your new baby!

Had to share... So many of you will not think it's any big deal; but since I will be attending the WI International and had never been to a poultry show, I thought I would grab any kind of experience that I could. At the last minute I heard about the county fair up in Vilas county and got my entry in. It's so small that I heard about it the day that the fair was opening and they still let me in. The entries were due in the Wed. of the week before.... So I take 4 of my birds. Of course there was no class for Silkies so I had to enter Any Bantam and Any other fancy bantam... Put a pullet and cockerel in each division. regular partridge and blue partridge.
I'm thinking the judge is going to be some volunteer that judges on the prettiest bird, the loudest crower and the biggest bird... You know what I mean. It looked like there were about 50 -60 birds total. I was told that the numbers were doubled from last year - Oh boy, well whatever. There were more farm type birds (Leghorns, Brahmas and such).

Well it turned out the the judge was a REAL judge. He will be judging in the junior division at the WI. International. So he's going around and actually disqualified a bird (which totally surprised me) and each bird that was there he gave an explanation of the SOP. I got rather impressed with this man. He was very patient and very nice.

So anyway, he comes to my birds and handles them very gently and shows them to everyone and looks straight at me and says great showmanship starts from day one with a bird. That means lots of care and upkeep and the owner of this bird has done just that. He goes on to explain to everyone that he can tell that there is good breeding behind each of these birds and that the care has been exemplary. On each of the tickets he wrote "NICE BIRD" in capital letters.
Well of course we got blue ribbons in each of the divisions and my Baby Huey got Best In Show!!!

The judge comes up to me after the judging is done and tells me that I have some extremely nice birds and that I should definitely think about taking them to the WI. International because he thinks that I would stand a very good chance of winning. He said it is very rare to see Silkies so young that are so nicely filled out and mature. (GO HUEY!!!!) He was asking about their breeding and said that I had done a very nice job.... I'm so tickled I can hardly sit still.

It was so cool that he sought me out to talk to me and not the other way around.

So, I'm sorry I got so long with this but after thinking that this was just a little Hoedunk (my word) fair and a waste of time I actually learned a lot. Something to think about for all of you others just starting out. Start small and you will always learn something (even if it's that you would never do it again).

Here is a picture of Mr. Best In Show before we left to go.

Thank you everyone!!! It has been so exciting and like I pointed out a very good learning experience.
