Thanks! I'm so happy she's a girl too! She's 19.5 weeks old today and I'm hoping that she'll lay eggs at 21 weeks, but I heard that Silkies can be really late. Right now my sex links haven't started laying yet either. I really can't wait for eggs!Aww I'm so glad she ended up a girl! She is such a cutie! Partridge is absolutely one of my favorite silkie colors.![]()

Altho Silkies can occasionally start laying early the popular start time seems to be around 6-7 months with some starting even later! I had one Silkie that went broody then moulted so it was 6 months before she resumed laying again. But I really don't mind their breaks from production. My two lay big eggs for their bantam size (1.25 to 1.5 oz) and up to 6/eggs per week so when they take a break from laying I'm relieved - they need the time to recover body nutrients.
Partridges are MY favourite too!
I agree the partridge here came in lay later than the white hen i have and she's younger.. i do find once they start they lay quite well, if you can stop them from going broody.. our white hen went back to that after she resumed laying from having her clutch and we're still battling that nonsense lol
Handsome! I have one that is similar..
I am a member of a facebook group for grey silkies. I still believe this guy falls in the partridge family. Mother is a grey, father was called a Silver partridge, but they do believe all SP's are really greys. Mom, even though a grey, will always throw a partridge chick out of ever 5 or 6 hatched. Which leads me to know she has partridge in her genes. Either way he is fantastic. Just trying to figure out how to breed him!!!

A heatwave doesn't help broody matters either. The excess heat just seems to throw them into a broody period even if they just came out of one. I let my Silkies brood their empty nests and just make sure they come out a few times during the day to eat/drink/dust-bathe. I don't believe in "breaking" a broody and let nature take its course. After 3 or 4 weeks of brooding they give up and rejoin the flock. I had one go broody for nearly a month and now she's moulting so there's a girl I won't get eggs from for several months. They are great layers of nice-sized eggs for such little birds so I don't mind when they stop production to recuperate their body nutrients.
