Partridge Silkies - Nothing else

So my beautiful partridge Silkie "Cayan" was sneezing when I went out to close up the coop

I brought her in and medicated and fed her. She seems otherwise ok but I am so worried. She is two years old and just a docile little sweetheart. I hope she is ok because I love her and hate the thought of losing her. I only have 5 silkies in my flock of 20 or so and she is my favorite

I have a spunky littlest Black Silkie (5 yrs old) that has CRD issues and the first time she came down with such a severe case of wheezing/breathing I thought we were for certain going to lose her overnight and first thing in the morning we rushed her to the vet -- he had to treat her with an injection of Baytril but she pulled through and I started her on a regimen of Poly-Vi-Sol no-iron children's liquid vitamins 1 or 2x a week during inclement weather. Inclement weather is what flares her respiratory issues -- sneezing, wheezing, sniffles, hoarse voice, or shaking head or all of them. The 2nd year she came down with respiratory issues the vet had to give Baytril injections 3 days in a row. 3rd year she was assigned oral Baytril. This year she seems to be doing okay so far and seems to have a little better sense to stay out of mud puddles and pouring rain. I don't try to treat her myself any more and it's averaged about once a year during inclement weather I had to take her to the vet for Baytril. But because I have her on a vitamin supplement and monitor her during the cold weather each year thereafter, her symptoms are milder. I rush her at the first sign of head shaking before sniffles or sneezing, or severe wheezing shows. I just got used to monitoring her to where I know what I need to do to keep her from developing more acute symptoms. I hope your little Silkie gets better

She started panting a few minutes ago which also worries me

What a cutie! You can always tell they aren't feeling well when they stand with a lower carriage of their body. In my area here in SoCal I lined up a vet that sees poultry as well as dogs/cats/exotics for emergencies. Most chicken illnesses/injuries we chickeneers can handle ourselves but there are times when only a vet and vet medicine will quickly treat our sick chickens. I only have 3 to 5 hens at one time so I can handle vet visits and just happened to find one that was less costly than avian specialists. But whatever you can afford. It certainly helped us to line up in advance a vet that would see chickens for the emergencies which we can't diagnose or treat adequately ourselves. I'm not experienced at diagnosing illness in my hens (except for the obvious CRD issues) and always afraid I'll use the wrong medicine for an inadequate diagnoses and just have better peace of mind knowing the vet will assign the right dosage and treatment for my sick hens. My vet sees dogs/cats/exotics/birds where most vets see dogs and cats only. It's worth calling around to line up a vet that also sees birds.

We live in a pretty "country " setting here in FL. I've never used a vet for my chickens ( mostly because my husband would have a fit) what does it cost? I'm betting we have a few around who see chickens because it's pretty common out where we are to have them, several of my neighbors do. Though I am betting they may not use a vet because many people consider them a low investment livestock kind of animal, but I don't see mine that way. This little hen came from a breeder who shows at the Ohio nationals and my son shows her for 4H - she is not an egg layer but I love my big fluffy egg girls too! I have had good luck treating them and saved quite a few from respiratory issues feom doing a lot of reading from different articl s and asking chicken people who have had had them longer than myself what they do. Our weather has actually been dry and mild for Florida. Seems we had one cold night ( down in upper 30s) and I noticed the little sneezes. She is doing much better now and has had a great appetite the whole while

but she is so mild mannered I'm tempted to just keep her inside and spoil her! I've been feeding her boiled eggs- I cooked for my chicken - I am officially a crazy chicken lady

She seems much more perky an active today and is walking around being her normal curious self without sneezes

My other hen Sandy whom I got from Amber Waves. She is gorgeous even tho her color is off. I just love her!

I do have a partridge breeding question. I have a partridge roo out with many different colored hens. What colors could they throw mixing him with blue, splash, and black hens? I don't breed for color perfection so I know I will get bleeding of colors but just curious.

Males will be blue or black with lots of silver leakage. Females will be blue or black with lots of brown leakage. That is assuming that the black hens came from BBS.

Let me find the pictures

As always with BYC, Click to go to the full size picture.

Here's the pictures. The rooster on right is from the partridge to BBS breeding. He was actually very pretty.

Hen from the same breeding. The brown is much easier to see in person.
