Partridge Silkies - Nothing else

That's great. I think it's such a great hobby for kids. The chickens probably enjoy the ride. LOL.

Everyone has to start somewhere. Believe me, I know all about that. As I have said before, this is my first year. The shows this year will be my first. I couldn't afford a million dollars for birds so I started with the nicest that I COULD afford. I picked traits that were important to me (foot feathering and toes). I had been looking for 1 nice rooster and couldn't find what I was looking for in 1 so I ended up getting 2. They weren't perfect, but with the 2 girls I had selected worked out fine. So you just start where you can. Just try to buy the most well bred birds that you can. Bloodlines actually mean a lot. It's a good base and then you work out from there. If you buy bloodlines you at least have a pretty good idea of what your birds will turn out to be. Of course there will be off birds, but overall you take 1 cull from good bloodlines and it will beat 1 cull from bad blood or hatchery stock. Am I right on that everyone?

My hen is ok. She has good Coloring I think. Her toes are right skin color etc. My roo is beautiful in color. I will have to get pics of him in sunlight. His toes are good. But his earlobes are stretched and not very blue. But she has great earlobes. So who knows. Maybe they could make some good babies?? I have never hatched anything. We eat her eggs..... I don't have an incubator..... I could let my buff silky go broody with their eggs?? I don't have a buff roo....

Her coloring is good. I would love to have a broody hen and yes I would let your buffy set on the eggs. Why not? Saves on the electric bill.

You won't know what will happen until you try. The kids would probably love the experience.

lmao I have a bunch of pet quality girls who are BROODY CRAZY ... I have 4 hens sitting right now, (1 of the 4 has eggs hatching RIGHT NOW) and these are there SECOND set of eggs each this year. 2 of the girls are only a year old this month, the others are 2 years old. I am sick of the broody fever - lol.

I wish I had that complaint... Sighhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Maybe next year when I have more than 2 hens!!! If anybody went broody now I could be in serious trouble.

Well I'm not really sure how.... But I know my buff silkie had hatched 10 babies and watched over them for about 5 weeks before she came to be with us. She started laying again 3 weeks ago. No real idea what to look for or how to do it. Or how to keep my partridge eggs to slide under her???

I kinda stumbled into silkies about 2 months ago. We went to a breeder and she was so kind but her birds weren't handled much. She raised partridge Wyandots. They were beautiful but my little one couldn't handle any of her adults. So she called a few ppl she knew. Over the phone we were quoted $25/ bird. There was the partridge pair and 2 buff hens. When we met them he fell in love with my daughter going crazy over them and just running to pick one up in the rain. So I got all 4 for $30. One of the buff hens fell into our pool and drown

My roo is friendly and kind with my kids. He however loves the ladies. Both his silkies (I house them together) as well as all 5 of my laying hens. Hahaha. He chases them all down. He doesnt care a bit what house they live in. He does keep the layers away from his girls tho. They are a little rough with the silkies sometimes.
