OK THIS IS THE CAUSE OF ALL YOUR PROBLEMS
Start at the bottom of a section of hair. I usually separate mine into right side, back, and left side. Once all the knots are out in the very bottom bit, work your way up a bit. This way it doesn't push all the knots into one big knot.

I was a total tomboy as a kid too. My younger brother and I are pretty close in age so when my older brother was at school, we were always together and inseparable as kids lol I remember one time during a snow storm we army crawled through it or something like that outside also far preferred Lincoln Logs and those Breyer type horses and legos to barbies and American girl. Actually the American girl ones scared me with their creepy blinking eyes!!!
