Past, Present, and Future Gardens

Very cool! I had to look those up. That'd save me from my memory (or lack there of). How long did that batch take? Is it like a coleslaw?

It was a 6 hour day, mostly because of the cleaning, chopping ,and shredding, but I was dealing with very gnarly cabbages... as I said “garden gleanings”, and I know why they weren’t picked... bugs, worms, and just :sick. It took about 20-30 minutes of massaging and then almost two weeks of fermenting at 9-18 degrees Celsius, as I live in a fairly cold RV while we build our house. You basically make coleslaw, add salt and massage it, then pack it into a jar, don’t seal it, and wait. That giant sausage making bowl started heaping full.

To me, putting up your garden bounty is as big a part of the process as growing it is. I bought the big ball book of canning too, but lacking a kitchen or canner have put it in the storage locker with our other belongings. The RV isn’t too good for books (humidity issues)

That must be rough. I'm at year 5 at this house and we are going to move in a year or more.

I know this year it'll be perfect then I'll have to start over once we get our land
It is rough but opportunity to do things I wish I had done differently and more knowledge from the get go. I can separate my berry bushes, fruit trees , medicinal herbs and spring and summer veggies in their own separate areas. Choosing the right spot for e everything is hard especially for the berries and trees
Gardening (and goats) are my true passions do I overthink these things

I’m not butchering them. I am going to put them on Craigslist once I can tell if I have any more males (want to list them all at once) and hopefully someone will want them as a flock rooster since they should all be gorgeous birds. But I am well aware that most likely someone will just eat them all but that is fine by me as long as I don’t have to do it.

That said, I am also thinking of keeping one so I will likely keep them a while longer yet until I can decide which one I want to keep/see if there are any more males besides the known 3.

Hmmm I suppose that’s true. May have to save and try it haha although aren’t there cheaper ones?
How did I get over here?

How did I get over here?

I have no freaking idea. LOL Apparently I replied here. But I swore I answered it in the quail thread? I didn’t think I even checked this one today but maybe I did? I just hit reply and answered in the other one or so I thought lol maybe it moved itself? :lau

That or I’m losing it. Also a distinct possibility. :lau:oops:

I really swore I just hit reply and answered there though. Idk. Really don’t. Can I move it? Maybe I’ll delete this and put it the right thread lol

A place to share what you've grown in the past and present... And what you plan on growing in the future.

Tips, advice, pics, and everything to do with gardening

Even if you have a black thumb, this is the place for you.

We all can learn from each other
I grow huge patches of greens for me and my chicks.

1st pic: last summer's vegetable garden.
2nd pic: the winter garden. This picture is almost 2 months old.

I just moved to this place in May 2019. Ripped up the front lawn for veggies. Working hard to fight the crab grass. Summer crop was wildly successful. Winter crop is chard, spinach, lettuce, kale, strawberries I have been dividing, onions, garlic, snow peas, and chives. I planted carrots in the fall but only like 2 of them came up.

To an earlier question: yes, I pickle squash and zucchini both. I use the same recipe as I do for cucumber pickles and I think they are fantastic!

Nice! That's a good sized one. Pruning definitely helps. What are your plans for improvement?

The garden is a decent size but the garden prior to that was around 1500 square feet. I got spoiled with that and although currently I don't need something quite that large, if I could have some extra crop to take to sell that would be a goal. A market garden or small farm capable of supporting a market or two plus a CSA would be a dream down the road; one that I am taking classes about and trying to learn and research about.

Goals for this year are to start making a compost pile and support it throughout the year. Keep better records of when fertilization was performed and try to stay closer on schedule and be more diligent about possible insect and disease problems.

Oh, lordy. That is a long day! Was it delicious?

Gardens are hard work all around. Especially when you've got a short window to get everything in. But oh so rewarding.
