pasting up. from a newbie chicken owner & board member.

We had a problem with this initially. The pasting quit when we adjusted the heat lamp's ht. above top of brooder so that the radiant heat wasn't as intense (right temp. but somewhat like the difference between standing in the direct sunlight), or in the shade on a 95° day - brooder should be big enough to allow all to move into and out of direct light. Sides of brooder (depending on what you are using) can be draped with towels, or just place a sheet under it and fold up over sides to adjust for temp. and avoid drafts (this allows for light to be moved away from `butts' without impacting temp).

We crushed dried poop (without pullling) with small, wide faced pliers (get the worst), then used a drop of Dawn dishwashing detergent, a couple drops of aloe vera with a bit of water and worked away the actual blockage of cloaca, without messing with trying to remove anything `stuck' to the the skin around the vent, with our fingers - gently (healed up pretty quick).

that is a great idea, i'll do that now!
we also used vaseline and have adjusted the temp, which i thought was a bit cool already (93 degrees) down to 91.
thank you!

We lost one more yesterday. the rest seem fine- I hope this is it for now!
We have used the vasoline each night- our girls don;t protest too much!
Temperature is down to 90 and they are still not directly under the light.
We have put a handful of soil in with them & changed to a very large (wrapping paper size) plastic container with brown craft/ shipping paper in the bottom, so we can rmove the paper each night & start fresh daily. They have gotten soil in their water, so we'll be cleaning that out more than once a day now.
I thank everyone for their help! I don;t know what I would have done, had I not found this board!

Glad you got those little hinies cleaned up. This morning my little golden seabright was pasted up. I noticed her not hopping around and scratching like all the others. She did make a little poo after I got her cleaned up. She still seems quite sleepy. I'm kind of worried about her. Raising chicks is so fun, and rewarding, but we have had a lot of heartbreak too. Ugh. I just hope she bounces back. How long does it take for the pasting up to make them sick? Also, we have a momma hen outside with her 4 babies, not even a week old. She doesn't like me to mess with them too much, but I haven't noticed them getting pasty. Does momma take care of that, or is it more to do with being outside? Just curious.

Oh no, I just saw you lost another, sorry. Didn't mean to ignore that. I am new on here, lol. Still trying to figure out the order of these threads.
