peep, peep, peep

the chicks spent a lot of time outside today. it was a beautiful day and was nice and shady in the run area. they LOVED it.

before we put them in the run, we let them roam the yard a bit ......but they still wanted us close.

( please disregard the chocolate chip muffin residue on my son's face lol )

in the coop run. they were so happy in there. pecking, peeping....exploring. happy chicks!!

they ate grass, pecked the ground for little pebbles....and tried catching bugs that flew by their faces.

I put a basin in the run with some play sand and food grade DE mixed in for dust bathing....but they were too busy poking around their new surroundings. i'll try again next time.

Taking our 3 out have become a daily ritual now. I'm not sure who likes it better: the chicks or the people. It's amazing how quickly they're no longer fluffly little balls, isn't it? I'm enjoying your updates, as our little flocks are about the same age.

I wish I were home during the day every day to take them out. But the nights are getting longer and warmer now so I hope to let them out in the run after work soon....instead of just weekends. They really loved it out there! I can't believe how fast they've grown. I'm so glad to have those first pictures. Hard to believe they are the same chicks! Do you have any new pics of your babies? Post them here if you can! Did you find a new home for Abe?

Here are my 3 with our 6 year old. Penny/Abe is up top; we're hanging on to her/him until the bitter crow. In the meantime, we have a few vague offers for a new home for him, but need to be more concrete. This way, if (and I'm still holding out foolish hope) there's crowing, we'll be ready to act that day.
Yesterday is was above 90 here, and the chickens enjoyed the shade of our daisy plants.

Aww. So sweet. You can see how much your little girl loves the chickens just by her smile. I am keeping all my crossables crossed that Abe is really Penny!

Hey would you please do me a favor and promise to really keep an eye on your daughter and the chicks? Ours suddenly grew large enough to feel threatened by my 2y/o son and he was attacked this past weekend by our 6.5 week old sweet little Black Australorp. Even at that age they can do mega damage and look what happened:

This was unprovoked, she was on his lap while he sat in the run...she just saw his shiny eyes and decided to check them out.

Try to remember they're still just animals and can hurt children in the blink of an eye. My kids will no longer be allowed in the run unsupervised (though I was right there at the time) and they aren't allowed to hold them anymore, just pet them.
