Hi! Does anyone have a clue how many days takes break a broodiness? Today went broody fifth chicken. I dont care, but in the coop is mess. I have only 5 nestbox and other laying hens drops their eggs on the floor and infront of nests. Broody chickens going to eat and they just crush these eggs. Usually all my chickens lay in the morning, but outside is a cold and there is confusion. A month ago went first broody, then second. I just put on them frozen water filled minicrip bag. Every night before the lights go off I moved them on the roostbar. Brahma chicken finished her broodiness, but after 1,5 week she went broody again. And others too, of course! I sealed the nestboxis, ayam cemanis still broke through. Today i closed the nests with a strong cardboard. How long should I hold these sealings? I have no chance to put eggs under broody chickens, its too cold outside and season will start in april.
Have you got a wire bottom cage? Put them in there with nothing but food and water. Takes about 3 days, but they will snap out of it.

Oh, we have a coop about 6 m2 and there is nestboxes, a place to throw peat at themselves and roostbars. We also have shelves because some of chickens like to be up high. When we started to breed chickens, we didnt know that we needed 2 coops. So we dont have an extra place.

You just need something big enough for the hens to move in comfortably. They are going to sit and grumble in it for the most of their time in there anyway! So they don't need more than say 2x chicken's size room in there. I use a "dog cage" for mine and it's way bigger than needed.

How many chickens do you have sumi and what breed are they?

We moved our Golden Retriever and Rat Terrier with us when we came to Ireland from the states. I still have their travel crates and was planning to use the smaller one to use when transporting my birds back to our property after purchasing. Now I am thinking I will set the huge one up in the coop as a broody breaker/hospital ward. Thanks for the conversation that helped me see the use for those cages.:thumbsup

Just two hens at the moment. A light Sussex and an OEG (LF) I had a few more games, but I gave them to the travellers when I moved house.

Chickens MUST be vaccinated against Newcastle's Disease

So newbie here wondering if this is different than the US? I follow the Chicken Chick and she addressed the Newcastle outbreak in California and Utah. I was under the impression that there is no cure but guessing there is a prevention if there is a vaccine available?!?! Was this because they assumed a low risk and went cheap by not vaccinating?

The only thing I've discovered so far here in Ireland is the need to register for a flock number but no vaccine requirements.

I would have liked to have had game fowl here.
Can you not get any where you are, or are you not allowed to keep them?

Good games are getting hard to come by here. Those who have them keep them under wraps and what is for sale is fairly expensive. I got given a few by the local travellers who lived near my previous village, after stopping by their camp to look at their flock. The deal was I raised a bunch of chicks for them and housed some broodies with chicks and they let me keep what I wanted, mostly. They had a gorgeous OEG pullet I loved, but they loved her too, so she had to go.
