Eine Woche Schnee!

The chickens are so afraid of the snow. That only two dare to vome doen for mealworms.
Last night and today we have a snow storm. This morning 20cm snow (really much over here). Unfortunately not because the climate change is in reverse, but because it got unexceptional warm at the North Pole. And a cold wind is visiting us as a result.

We got some snow too, but not as much as up north or south in Bavaria. I think we ended up with 10-15cm. It's really cold today... -10°C yes, I know... some areas in Germany are way colder than that.
The water in the coop is frozen solid. Great! :hmm I had to use some tools to crack it out of the rim. Of course I busted 2 waterers. :rant:rant:rant Just ordered new ones. I have more than enough but if I break a few more... darn!
I am collecting hatching eggs for my feed dealer atm. So I am at the coop 3 times a day checking for eggs and refreshing the water... or should I say ice.
And more news on the chicken front. I was watching the rooster I bought in fall. I never warmed up to him for some reason. He does not warn the hens when a bird flies overhead. He does not let them know about food he found... just eats it himself. He does not care when they run off because I am throwing in some brussel sprouts... he just stays in the back. So I took some eggs and put them in the incubator to see for fertility. 0%!!! Yesterday I separated him from the hens and put him in one of the rooster boxes. He did not complain!! He was just like... oh goody!! Food! He does not care about the rooster outside his pen. And the weird thing is he rooster on the outside does not care about him. The hens did not care either that he is gone. So... my "yellow" breeding group which is the largest (4 hens) and best laying group is not producing fertile eggs. I am getting a new rooster tonight from the breeder I got my other birds from. So when I start collecting for me in about a week I should start seeing fertile eggs. I have never seen or heard about a rooster who was such a dudd!
This week one of my hens died... a day or so before I thought her comb was pale... but didn't think nothing of it. They are still coming out of the winter break. Then the day she died I was watching her because I got the impression she wasn't doing well. But she didn't look sick either. So when I went in in the coop around noon she was dead. I would have butchered her after breeding season anyways. She is one of my original hens and getting old. But still... I would have liked to get some chicks from her still.

Hope you guys and your chickens are doing well.

What a strange rooster. His behaviour does resemble to that of our minister president 😂.
And a big :hugs For you’re hen.

We have similar weather over here.
The chickens won’t come out of their coop since Sunday. And the 5W water warmer wasn’t working as it should with the cold wind.

Pic of the Rhine from yesterday with high water and ice.

@abpatchy I'm sorry to hear about your hen. :hugs Looks like that rooster was a dud, it happens more than you think though. So the weak chick didn't make it, but I've got four heathy chicks in the brooder now, full of life.

My Sussex have been doing the "we want to sleep outside" larky, but luckily, I can herd them in with a torch. I didn't bother with the two roosters an a hen from January 2020 though, the have been here long enough to know when it is time to go in at night. It snowed last night, so maybe they will learn, it's not nice outside the coop to sleep. I put their breakfast outside, before I went to work, here she is looking miserable but i have no sympathy with her..lol

I do not know what is up with the snowplows here. I have been to Freiburg and back, and none of the roads have been cleared anywhere. Still no sign of them anywhere. I dont want to ski to work!⛷‍‍️ This morning was like sledding to work in my car.

Hey guys:frow long time since you heard from me, good to see you all survived the cold.
Here i am ready for new birds. Do'nt know yet if i will get pullets or unsexed chicks. I know they wil have to be vaccinated. What would you do?
Nice to have you back!!!
Well, it depends what you are looking for. Hybrids are now starting to be in season. If you are looking for a specific breed then chicks would be a better option. Most breeders have already sold their adults and only have their breeding stock left. It's chick time!! :jumpy:jumpy
