Peeps in Europe!

Something I like to share about the factory farming and what happened in the Netherlands last week.
:
(translated from our news media): Slaughterhouse Gosschalk in Epe, has to close immediately after videos came out last Monday showing employees of the company mistreating animals. This was announced by outgoing minister Schouten (Agriculture, ChristenUnie) in a letter to the House of Representatives. She calls the images that action group ‘Pigs in Nood’ made undercover in the slaughterhouse "horrific" and believes that "these excesses must stop". On Tuesday, a parliamentary majority asked for the closure of Gosschalk.

( Last week several Supermarket chains allready announced they would no longer buy meat from this slaughterhouse. )

We have a SinterKlaas (Our Santa Claus which is different , he has his birthday on the 5th of december, comes by boat from Spain and travels on a white horse over rooftops. They say he gives all the presents to the children.

With X-mass we have a kerstman too🎅 like the Santa in the US. But this is mainly for the elder people who like give presents to each other. And the date is more convenient bc its a Holliday and families gather anyway.
this is similar to germany, right? do you have krampus too? I lived in koeln for half a year and I loved it!

No, In the Netherlands the helpers of Sinterklaas are called Zwarte Piet (black Pete) or just Piet. These helpers are coloured or blackened people with Spanish 16th-17th century clothing of servants in Spain.

Since a couple of years the helpers are changing their appearance, because the dark brown/black colouring reminds too much at slavery or ‘blackface’.
And the black people in the Netherlands do feel they are discriminated with the use of the blackened character (left).

@BDutch you were right! Toos isn't broody anymore. I prevented her from nesting in the night. The next day she was a grumping clucking chicken but outside. Harrasing nugget every time she wanted to go in to the coop to lay her first egg. Today all is normal again. And I got 2 eggs today, only Jacky has given 0 signs of wanting to lay.

I had a broody too last week. Janice, a Dutch x Tournaisis mix.
Thurstday night I missed her roosting. I suspected earlier that she could be broody (otherwise she needed a long time to lay an egg.) I put her in the roosting area after dusk.
Next day I threw her out of the nest box twice. Took away the fake egg in ‘her’ nest. And closed the nestbox area around 21 h. I checked at dusk, they all roosted. Opened the pop door to the nesting area again to give the other hens acces to the nests early the next day.

The next day Janice was no longer broody. ;)

Nice to have all 5 chickens and 3 chicks roosting now. :wee

I have two incubators runnng now. 3 of the eggs in the first had started to develop under a broody and died, so took them out, now there is only 10 in there. The second has 18 that I set yesterday. Should hatch four days apart. I have a large wooden crate, that I will be using for a brooder, as the metal one will be too small.
